JUST IN: Democrats Scream ‘No’ After GOP Rep. Proposes Moment Of Prayer For Charlie Kirk
An unbelievable moment occurred on the House floor Wednesday, when at least one and possibly multiple Democrats refused to participate in a proposed moment of prayer for conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated while speaking at Utah Valley University on Wednesday morning.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) convened the session by asking members to hold a moment of silence in honor of Kirk. The moment was observed, at which point Republican members called on someone to lead the chamber in prayer.
Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) rose to request a House-wide moment of prayer in honor of Kirk a little under an hour after his death was confirmed by President Donald Trump. As Boebert was bringing her motion to the floor, grumbling could be heard from a group of Democrats, at least one of whom shouted “No!”
Tensions then began to flare as Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) attempted to restore order. “Ya’ll caused this,” Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) could be heard shouting at the group of Democrats.
A number of left-wing media outlets and personalities have suggested that Kirk essentially deserved to be shot.
“We don’t know any of the full details of this. We don’t know if this was a supporter shooting their gun off in celebration or so we have no idea about this. But following up with what was just said, he’s been one of the most divisive, especially divisive younger figures in this, who is constantly sort of pushing this sort of hate speech or sort of aimed at certain groups,” said MSNBC political commentator Matthew Dowd.
“And I always go back to Hateful thoughts lead to hateful words, which then lead to hateful actions. And I think that’s the environment we’re in, that people just, you can’t stop with these sort of awful thoughts you have and then saying these awful words and not expect awful actions to take place. And that’s the unfortunate environment we’re in.”
President Donald Trump announced Wednesday evening that all flags at U.S. federal buildings have been lowered to half-staff in honor of Kirk. “Charlie Kirk was an incredible patriot — brave, tough as hell, and a dear friend to our entire family. In his honor, all @Trump properties will fly their flags at half-staff,” the president’s son, Eric, announced in a social media post.
“We will always celebrate his life, strive to make him proud, and pray that God watches over Erika and their precious kids.”
Kirk was pronounced dead shortly before 4:30 Eastern Time after he was struck in the neck by a single bullet. The gunman is still at-large as of this report.
