BREAKING: DeSantis Prepares To Sign Bill Allowing Him Run For President While Remaining Governor
The Florida House passed a bill on Friday with a 76-34 vote that would permit the state leader to run for the presidency without stepping down from their current position.
The bill’s approval comes only a few days after it was passed in the state Senate by a vote of 28 to 12. The bill is now on its way to Governor Ron DeSantis’ desk for approval.
The timing of the bill’s approval and Governor DeSantis’ potential presidential announcement adds to the uniqueness of the situation.
“We in this body are doing the governor’s bidding,” Democrat Rep. Angela Nixon, said. “He needs to resign to run if he wants to run for president, period. Last time I checked, being governor is a full-time job. Running for president takes a lot of work.”
Republican Lawrence McClure stated, “Florida has been a model of election integrity and efficiency, but there’s always room for improvement. This bill seeks to continue Florida success in these areas by streamlining certain provisions of the Florida election code, while ensuring bad actors are held accountable.”
Earlier this week, it was revealed that DeSantis was being encouraged by some of his supporters to make a presidential announcement as soon as May 11th to counter the growing narrative that former President Donald Trump is the leading candidate for the 2024 GOP nomination.
However, some within the governor’s inner circle believe that such a declaration would be premature. Despite the differences of opinion, it is understood that the announcement is targeted for mid-May and will likely take the form of an exploratory committee, with the official launch following soon after.
The situation in Tallahassee seems to support this, with Republican operatives revealing that several national firms have recently arrived, suggesting that Governor DeSantis is actively assembling a campaign team.
One of the operatives stated, “It feels like a team that is staffing up, not scaling down.” Another source added, “Large campaigns require in-house planning, and this has been ‘vendors: assemble’ week in Tallahassee.”
In general, presidential candidates may wait until later in the election cycle to announce their candidacy to gain strategic advantages, such as maximizing fundraising potential or avoiding being overshadowed by other major events or announcements. Additionally, candidates like DeSantis may want to wait to see how political and economic factors unfold before making a decision.
DeSantis is seen as a rising star by some in the Republican Party, who has a strong conservative record and a loyal base of supporters. If he decides to run for president in 2024, he could pose a serious challenge to former President Trump.
