Gain-of-function research is a type of research where viruses or other microorganisms are modified in the laboratory to make them more virulent or infectious in order to study their behavior and potential effects on humans. However, the potential risks of gain-of-function research have concerns about the possibility of accidental or intentional release of highly virulent viruses that could cause a pandemic, which is exactly what happened in 2020.
Back in March of 2021, former CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield expressed his belief that the most probable cause of the COVID-19 pandemic was a laboratory release of SARS-CoV-2 from gain of function research. According to Redfield, he was excluded from meetings by Dr. Fauci because of this point of view.
On Wednesday, Marjorie Taylor Greene asked former CDC director Robert Redfield about the creation of coronavirus. “Was this something that would be in line with gain of function research and the capabilities it would provide to a virus?”
Redfield said, “Yep!”
MTG asked, “Did you know of any evidence they found within three days from February 1st to February 4th to be able to confirm that it was not created in a lab?”
“As I mentioned earlier, I was excluded from those conversations…and to be excluded I found [this] unusual,” Redfield pointed out. “When you have a group of people who decide there can only be one point of view, it can be very problematic.”
