Congressman Greg Murphy (R-NC) announced today that he has been diagnosed with a significant medical condition known as a pituitary macroadenoma, a tumor at the base of the skull. The North Carolina Republican shared the personal and profound news through an emotional press release.

“As a physician I have, for the last 30 years, taken care of thousands and thousands of patients. It is now my turn to be one,” Murphy stated, detailing his unexpected diagnosis and the forthcoming surgical procedure aimed at removing the tumor, believed to be benign yet threatening due to its size and location.

Murphy, who has served in Congress since 2019, highlighted his unshakeable faith in his medical team, reflecting a deep-seated trust born of his own decades in the healthcare field. “I have the utmost faith in my physicians and surgeons to get me through this and back on the road to full recovery,” he affirmed.

Murphy currently serves as the U.S. Representative for North Carolina’s 3rd congressional district. He is also a urologist who was first elected to Congress in a special election in 2019. The election was held to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Representative Walter B. Jones Jr. Before his tenure in Congress, Murphy served in the North Carolina House of Representatives.

His legislative interests and efforts often focus on healthcare, given his medical background, but he also engages in issues related to veterans, national security, and the economy. As a congressman, Murphy has been involved in discussions and policymaking around public health and the COVID-19 response, among other issues.

The Congressman did not miss the opportunity to advocate for the healthcare community, praising the dedication and sacrifice of medical professionals across the country. “The doctors, nurses, and medical staff who train and sacrifice for years and years to care for others have answered the highest call of humanity and should be appreciated for such,” Murphy passionately wrote.

He acknowledged the overwhelming support from his wife Wendy, family, staff, and the “wonderful, amazing, and patriotic constituents of North Carolina’s Third District.” With a prognosis that remains “excellent,” Murphy expressed his eagerness to return to full-time work, entrusting his recovery to divine hands.

“I am, as are all things, in the hands of God and am at absolute peace,” he finished.
