Several people have been shot after a gunman opened fire on the Brown University campus in Providence, Rhode Island on Saturday.

In a voicemail to students, university officials said there was an active shooter near the Barus and Holley engineering building. An alert text message sent to students and staffs urged them to “lock doors, silence phones and stay hidden until further notice.”

“Remember: RUN, if you are in the affected location, evacuate safely if you can; HIDE, if evacuation is not possible, take cover; FIGHT, as a last resort, take action to protect yourself,” school officials wrote in the alert, according to a report from Fox News. “Stay tuned for further safety information.”

A large contingent of emergency vehicles were seen rushing to the site of the incident, while police scanner audio appeared to indicate that multiple people had been shot. An exact figure on the total number of injuries or fatalities is not known as of this report.

The Associated Press initially reported that a suspect was in custody, though the university refuted that report in another text alert sent at 5:11 p.m. local time.

“Continue to shelter in place. Remain away from Barus & Holley area. Police do not have a suspect in custody and continue to search for suspect(s). Brown coordinating with multiple law enforcement agencies on site. Emergency medical on scene. Stay tuned for further safety information,” reads the follow-up alert.

Another alert sent at 5:27 said that shots were reportedly fired near Governor Street, located approximately 500 feet from Barus & Holley. This is the area where the shooting was initially reported and where the bulk of law enforcement response was.

“BrownUAlert: Urgent: Report of shots fired near Governor street. Continue to shelter in place. Stay clear. Law enforcement responding,” the alert read.

Heavily-armed SWAT teams were seen staging on the campus as of the latest report. A spokesperson for the FBI stated that the bureau was aware of the incident and had dispatched resources to assist.

The Providence Police Department confirmed that “multiple people” had been shot in a 5:33 p.m. update, though they did not provide an exact number or share any information on the severity of the injuries.

Officials are expected to provide additional details in a press conference at some point after 6:30 p.m. Eastern Time.

Brown University, an Ivy League School, has a student population of roughly 11,005, the majority of whom are undergraduate students.

Rep. Gabe Amo (D-RI), who represents parts of Providence in Congress, said he was “monitoring” the shooting and in touch with law enforcement. “If you are in the area, please stay inside and allow law enforcement to do their work,” Amo said, urging those with information to contact police.
