BREAKING: Mitch McConnell CAVES, Endorses Donald Trump After Major Super Tuesday Turnout

In the twilight of his time in the U.S. Senate, Mitch McConnell (R-KY), a formerly fierce critic of President Donald Trump, has announced that he is endorsing the party’s frontrunner, according to the Washington Post.

“It is abundantly clear that former President Trump has earned the requisite support of Republican voters to be our nominee for President of the United States,” McConnell said in a statement. “It should come as no surprise that as nominee, he will have my support. During his presidency, we worked together to accomplish great things for the American people including tax reform that supercharged our economy and a generational change of our federal judiciary — most importantly, the Supreme Court. I look forward to the opportunity of switching from playing defense against the terrible policies the Biden administration has pursued to a sustained offense geared towards making a real difference in improving the lives of the American people.”

A nod of approval from Sen. McConnell represents the highest-ranking endorsement notched by President Trump in the upper chamber, adding to the lengthy list of Republicans who have lined up behind his bid. Key allies to McConnell, including Minority Whip John Thune (R-SD) and John Cornyn (R-TX) — who has announced his intention to succeed McConnell — lined up behind Trump months ago. McConnell’s endorsement comes the same day as Nikki Haley announced she would be ending her long-shot bid against the former president.

While grassroots activists have openly loathed McConnell for years, his backing of Trump could help relieve the unease that establishment Republican donors frequently express about the possibility of funding a Trump-Biden rematch.

An aide to President Trump said he welcomed the endorsement and agreed it may help with securing additional financial backing for his campaign.

To his left, Haley has revealed areas of concern for Trump among voters he will likely need to remove Biden in December, including suburban moms and high-net-wealth individuals who supported her in greater numbers throughout the Republican primary. With McConnell’s backing, Trump may not find it easier to persuade party members still on the sidelines to come aboard and help with attracting key demographics where he still trails Biden.

The acrimony between McConnell and Trump became vicious and extremely personal toward the end of his four years in the White House, with the Senate leader publicly blaming Trump for the violence that occurred on January 6th, 2021 while Trump ridiculed McConnell and his wife with pejorative nicknames. However, senior advisors to both men have engaged in discussions in recent months that have both sides at a pause in the infighting, agreeing instead to save their powder for the general election.
