BREAKING: One In ‘Serious Condition’ Following Harris-Walz Motorcade Crash
A bloody motorcycle crash interrupted Vice President Kamala Harris’s motorcade in Georgia on Thursday as she traveled with running mate Gov. Tim Walz through the swing state on a multi-day tour.
The Secret Service explained that officers with the Savannah Police Department were traveling as part of the duo’s security detail when one of its officers suffered “serious injuries” and fell down with his bike, according to the Daily Caller. In a statement, the department reported this as a “single-vehicle accident” that occurred around 7 p.m. Eastern time and identified the victim as Savannah Police Corporal David Bates. Gov. Walz was in a tour bus at the time of the accident. “The Savannah Police Department is supporting Corporal Bates and his family as he begins his recovery from injuries sustained in this vehicle accident,” SPD Chief Lenny B. Gunther said in the statement.

Fox 5 Atlanta grabbed still images of the frantic scene as other officers responded to their fallen colleague. Visible blood tracks on the ground ran underneath Bates’s body. The department’s statement said it would be supporting him through what appears to be a difficult road to recovery. “We will be by his side every step of the way,” the statement read. It adds that Bates “sustained serious injuries” and was taken to Memorial Health University Medical Center for further medical care. “He is in stable condition and continues to undergo treatment,” they said.

“The Secret Service is aware of an incident that occurred during a motorcade movement yesterday,” Special Agent in Charge of the U.S. Secret Service’s Atlanta Field Office Frederick D. Houston said in the statement. The lead agent for Harris’s entourage said the motorcade would continue on to its next stop as planned. He added, “The movement was not affected by the incident. We are thankful for the support of our law enforcement partners and wish Corporal David Bates a full and speedy recovery.” No further details about what caused the accident were immediately available.
The accident is a black eye for Harris as she barnstorms southern Georgia to appeal to Black residents who will make up one in three voters this November. She had just completed a solo rally in Savannah, and other stops during the two-day trip include Liberty County High School, a southern BBQ restaurant, and visits with small business owners. She is hoping to repeat President Joe Biden’s feat of flipping the state blue in 2020. Current polls show a neck-and-neck race as Trump leads Harris 46.6% to 46%, according to ABC News.
Both Walz and Harris sat for a joint CNN interview on Thursday, after which Walz headed to Massachusetts for a solo rally with a firefighters’ union. Harris and Trump are expected to face off in their first debate on September 10th.
