Soldiers at a U.S. Army base in Georgia sheltered in place after a mass shooter opened fire Wednesday morning.

Casualties have been reported at Fort Stewart, with a police spokesperson confirming “there is an active shooter.”

Lt. Col. Angel Tomko, the Fort Stewart Police Department spokesperson, wrote in a Facebook post for Fort Stewart Hunter Army Airfield said, “Casualties have been reported and the situation is ongoing.”

“The installation was locked down at 11:04 a.m. and law enforcement is on the scene at the time,” the post said.

The eastern outpost sits about 40 miles outside of Savannah and is home to the 3rd Infantry Division. Reserve and active Army units also deploy from Fort Stewart. More than 10,000 residents reside on the property, according to CNN.

A spokesman confirmed to CNN that Fort Stewart remains in lockdown. No status of the shooter, or how many shooters, was included in the brief description of the situation.

A spokesperson for the FBI confirmed that its agents are on site and partnering with the Army Criminal Investigation Division to locate the shooter and protect residents.

Gov. Brian Kemp, writing on X, stated he was in “close contact” with federal law enforcement, adding he was “saddened by today’s tragedy at Ft. Stewart.”

“We are keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers, and we ask that Georgians everywhere do the same,” he wrote.
