Former President Donald Trump told reporters in Philadelphia that he has made his decision on a running mate, though he has not told them yet.

NBC News journalist Jake Traylor reported that Trump has selected his vice president, though he has not informed them yet. He added that the candidate will be present at next week’s presidential debate between Trump and President Biden.

It has for weeks been reported that Trump has narrowed his shortlist for vice president down to a handful of names, including Senator JD Vance (R-OH), Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), Senator Tim Scott (R-SC), Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), Dr. Ben Carson and North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum.

Names on the shortlist are in the process of being vetted before Trump makes a decision, which is expected to come during or before next month’s Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.

The Trump campaign has long cultivated interest and speculation surrounding the former president’s running mate. While the names on the shortlist have been heavily reported, insiders have noted that a number of “dark horse candidates” remain, including Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) and businessman Vivek Ramaswamy.

“Trump is looking for three things,” one Trump insider told the New York Post earlier this month. “He’s looking for who can raise money, he’s looking for who is an effective surrogate on TV with adversarial media, and he’s looking at who will do the best job debating Kamala Harris.”

The former president has repeatedly stated that his decision will be announced during the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee next month.
