BREAKING: Trump Fulfills Campaign Promise With Major Pardon

President Donald Trump fulfilled yet another campaign promise less than 48 hours after taking office by announcing that Silk Road creator Ross Ulbricht will receive a full, unconditional pardon.

“I just called the mother of Ross William Ulbricht to let her know that in honor of her and the Libertarian Movement, which supported me so strongly, it was my pleasure to have just signed a full and unconditional pardon of her son, Ross,” Trump announced in a Truth Social post on Tuesday evening. “The scum that worked to convict him were some of the same lunatics who were involved in the modern day weaponization of government against me. He was given two life sentences, plus 40 years. Ridiculous!”

Ulbricht, a web developer, was sentenced to life in prison in 2015 for helping to create the black market site Silk Road, which became a hub for trafficking narcotics and weapons. Ulbricht was arrested in 2013 and ultimately sentenced to life in prison after a judge linked multiple deaths with the site, even though Ulbricht did not sell weapons or drugs himself.

His case has become a popular cause among Libertarians, who have argued that the sentence is far too harsh. Critics have also argued that Ulbricht was sentenced for conduct that was not covered in the trial.

In May, Trump delivered a speech to a hostile crowd at the Libertarian Party convention. While attendees frequently interrupted the then-Republican candidate throughout his remarks — which were given in hopes of securing the party’s endorsement — Trump managed to please the crowd by vowing to commute Ulbricht’s sentence to time served.

“If you vote for me, on day one I will commute the sentence of Ross Ulbricht, to a sentence of time served,” Trump said, causing the crowd to explode with the loudest cheers of the night. “He’s already served 11 years. We’re going to get him home.”

Ulbricht thanked then-candidate Trump for making the promise in an X post at the time. “Last night, Donald Trump pledged to commute my sentence on day 1, if reelected. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you,” he wrote. “After 11 years in prison, it is hard to express how I feel at this moment. It is thanks to your undying support that I may get a second chance.”

Trump had vowed to take action on Ulbricht’s case during his first day in office, during which he signed more than 100 executive orders and issued a full pardon for all January 6 defendants with the exception of a couple dozen. Those who did not receive a pardon will have their sentences commuted, while a review will soon be conducted to determine whether they should receive full pardons.

Many libertarians indicated that Trump’s promise to pardon Ross Ulbricht was a major factor in their decision to vote for him in the 2024 presidential election. In one example, the Libertarian Party of New Hampshire listed the campaign promise as its top reason for endorsing Trump’s candidacy.
