Former President Donald Trump has selected his vice presidential candidate.

The announcement, delivered via Trump’s Truth Social account, revealed Ohio Senator J.D. Vance as his 2024 running mate. Vance, a celebrated author and former Marine, will now play a key role in Trump’s bid to reconnect with the heartland and working-class voters across America.

“After lengthy deliberation and thought, and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States is Senator J.D. Vance of the Great State of Ohio,” Trump wrote.

Highlighting Vance’s robust credentials, Trump praised his vice presidential pick for his service in the Marine Corps, academic excellence at The Ohio State University and Yale Law School, and successful career in technology and finance. Vance’s bestselling memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy,” which was adapted into a major motion picture, resonates deeply with the American working class, capturing the struggles and aspirations of many in the Rust Belt states.

“J.D. has had a very successful business career in Technology and Finance, and now, during the Campaign, will be strongly focused on the people he fought so brilliantly for, the American Workers and Farmers in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Minnesota, and far beyond,” Trump continued.

“As Vice President, J.D. will continue to fight for our Constitution, stand with our Troops, and will do everything he can to help me MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN. Congratulations to Senator J.D. Vance, his wife, Usha, who also graduated from Yale Law School, and their three beautiful children. MAGA2024!” Trump finished.

Trump’s choice reinforces his strategy to target key battleground states such as Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, and Minnesota—regions that could be crucial for a 2024 victory. Vance’s role in the campaign, as outlined by Trump, will focus intensively on American workers and farmers, a demographic that both candidates have vocally championed in the past.

WATCH:

In 2021, Vance entered politics, running for the U.S. Senate from Ohio as a Republican. He has positioned himself as a populist conservative, with a platform that has included strong anti-immigration stances and criticism of the political establishment. In the buildup to the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee on Monday, he was spotted departing his Cincinnati, Ohio home in a motorcade, fueling speculation about his eventual nomination.

“I’m human, right?” Vance said in an interview with Fox News in late June about the vice presidency. “So, when you know this thing is a possibility, if it doesn’t happen… there is certainly going to be a little bit of disappointment. They’ll ask me if they ask me, and if they don’t, that’s fine.”
