On Wednesday, former President Trump accused Senator Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) of being a “pawn for the Democrats” and called on fellow Republicans to remove McConnell from his position as Senate minority leader.

In a statement, President Trump called for Senator McConnell to be removed from his position of longtime leadership and highlighted an article that was published on Wednesday in The Federalist concerning McConnell and his wife, Elaine Chao’s suspected ties to China.

According to a comment made by Trump, “Mitch McConnell is not an Opposition Leader; rather, he is a pawn for the Democrats to get whatever it is that they want. He is afraid of them, and will not do what has to be done. A new Republican Leader in the Senate should be picked immediately!

Since the Senate leader criticized the past president in Congress for his role in the attack on the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021, Trump has been engaged in a fight with McConnell, whom he has dubbed “Old Crow.”

In reference to Republican candidates for the Senate, a number of whom have been hand-picked by Trump, the past president lashed out at McConnell over the weekend for comments he made about “candidate quality” last week. McConnell has predicted that the contest in November to control the Senate will be a close one.

Trump also took a jab at Chao, his erstwhile Transportation director, who stepped down from office one day following the attack on January 6. He referred to Chao as “McConnell’s crazy wife” in his remarks. In the message that he sent to her on Wednesday, he referred to her as “Coco.”

In addition, President Trump made a call for the Republican Party to choose a new leader for the Senate in order to improve the odds of the party winning back control of Congress in 2022.

At the time, Trump was quoted as saying, “I think we’re going to do very well. We need good leadership. Mitch McConnell has not done a great job — I think they should change Mitch McConnell.

In his statement on Wednesday, President Trump accused Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of giving the “Radical Left the Trillions and Trillions of Dollars that they constantly DEMAND.” Trump also criticized McConnell for failing to prevent the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act, a landmark law that addresses taxation, climate change, and healthcare.

Democrats have been able to find ways around the steadfast objection of the Republican Party to their large spending initiatives. This includes passing the Inflation Reduction Act through the reconciliation bill process to circumvent a filibuster and President Biden using executive power this week to forgive student loan debt.
