President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. and Iran are in the final stages of negotiating that a ceasefire agreement that would pause the conflict and open the vital Strait of Hormuz while a longer agreement is discussed. The announcement comes just an hour ahead of the president’s 8 p.m. Eastern Time deadline, after which he vowed to launch sweeping attacks on Iranian infrastructure.

“Based on conversations with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, of Pakistan, and wherein they requested that I hold off the destructive force being sent tonight to Iran, and subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks,” Trump announced in a Truth Social post.

The president further explained that the U.S. has already achieved a number of its military objectives, which have been described as the degradation of Iran’s nuclear program and ballistic missile capabilities in past statements. “The reason for doing so is that we have already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning Longterm PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East,” Trump continued.

He went on to describe the agreement as a 10-point proposal from Iran, which provided a “workable basis” on which to negotiate.

“Almost all of the various points of past contention have been agreed to between the United States and Iran, but a two week period will allow the Agreement to be finalized and consummated,” Trump continued.

“On behalf of the United States of America, as President, and also representing the Countries of the Middle East, it is an Honor to have this Longterm problem close to resolution.”

The announcement comes after intense talks between the two warring nations, in conjunction with regional mediators led by Pakistan.

President Trump had vowed to launch sweeping attacks on Iranian infrastructure if a deal was not reached by 8 p.m. This would have included additional strikes on power plants, bridges and water treatment plants.

Axios correspondent Barack Ravid, citing an unnamed White House official, reported that Israel has agreed to the ceasefire deal and will be suspending its strikes on Iran for at least two weeks. “The White House official said ceasefire will come into force when Iran opens the Strait of Hormuz,” he added.

Iran’s Supreme National Security Council described the agreement as a “historic victory” that achieves a number of its strategic goals. The regime claims that it will be allowed to “maintain control” over the Strait of Hormuz through the establishment of a “safe transit protocol.”

The regime further stated that the proposal includes a nonaggression pact, sanctions relief and regional military de-escalation.

This is a developing story. Additional details will be provided as they become available.
