BREAKING: Trump Takes Bold Action After Colombia Refuses To Accept Deportation Flights

The Trump Administration is imposing hefty tariffs and will be shutting down visa programs in Colombia after the South American nation’s left-wing government refused to allow a flight filled with criminal illegal aliens to land.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced Sunday that he would not allow a deportation flight — which was filled with Colombian nationals who had entered the United States illegally — to land in the country. The Colombian leader stated that “the United States can’t treat Colombian migrants like criminals.”

In an X post, Petro declared that he will “disallow the entry of US planes carrying Colombian migrants into our territory,” adding that the U.S. “should establish a protocol for the dignified treatment of migrants before we receive them.”

Keeping in line with his campaign promises to impose pressure on nations that refuse to curb illegal immigration to the United States, President Trump announced a number of measures that will be implemented in response to Colombia’s decision.

“I was just informed that two repatriation flights from the United States, with a large number of Illegal Criminals, were not allowed to land in Colombia. This order was given by Colombia’s Socialist President Gustavo Petro, who is already very unpopular amongst his people,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post. “Petro’s denial of these flights has jeopardized the National Security and Public Safety of the United States,“ Trump continued before listing a number of steep retaliatory measures.

To start, the U.S. will be placing 25 percent emergency tariffs on all Colombian goods entering the United States. If the situation is not rectified within one week, the tariffs will be raised to 50 percent.

In addition, Trump will also be imposing a travel ban on the nation and will move to immediately revoke visas of Colombian government officials, as well as the nation’s allies and supporters. Visa sanctions will also be placed on “on all Party Members, Family Members, and Supporters of the Colombian Government,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials will also be ordered to conduct inspections of all Colombian nationals and cargo on national security grounds. Additional banking and financial sanctions will also be fully imposed against the Colombian government.

“These measures are just the beginning. We will not allow the Colombian Government to violate its legal obligations with regard to the acceptance and return of the Criminals they forced into the United States!” Trump wrote.

The president’s swift response already appears to have taken effect on the Colombian government, as Petro already appears to be walking back his comments.

Petro soon specified that he would not allow the use of military aircraft for deportations. “A migrant is not a criminal and should be treated with the dignity that a human being deserves. That is why I sent back the US military planes that were carrying Colombian migrants. I cannot make migrants stay in a country that does not want them; but if that country returns them, it must be with dignity and respect for them and for our country,” he said. “We will receive our nationals in civilian airplanes, without treating them as criminals. Colombia deserves respect.”
