A seasoned Democrat from New Jersey, Pascrell Jr. made a significant mark in the U.S. House of Representatives with his dedication to several key issues, including tax reform, healthcare, and support for veterans. Serving since 1997, Pascrell represented New Jersey’s 9th congressional district, which includes parts of Bergen, Passaic, and Hudson counties.
Born on January 25, 1937, in Paterson, New Jersey, Pascrell’s early life in a blue-collar family shaped his political views and career. He attended Fordham University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism and later a master’s degree in philosophy. Before his tenure in Congress, Pascrell made his mark in local government, first as a member of the New Jersey General Assembly from 1988 to 1996, and then as the mayor of Paterson, New Jersey. In Congress, Pascrell was known for his fiery spirit and commitment to the constituents of his district.
He was a vocal advocate for comprehensive tax reform, pushing for policies that ensure fairness for middle and lower-income families. His efforts were particularly focused on closing loopholes that benefit the wealthy and large corporations. Pascrell was also a staunch supporter of healthcare reform. He was an ardent supporter of the Affordable Care Act, viewing it as a crucial step towards universal healthcare.
