On April 29th, during a private event with his wife in Sandestin, Florida, U.S. Congressman Matt Gaetz was reportedly assaulted by a 41-year-old woman named Selena J. Chambers.

Chambers, a self-proclaimed member of the so-called “Resistance” and registered Democrat from Tallahassee, Florida, was apprehended by Walton County officers and charged with one count of battery on an elected official, as well as one count of battery for touching or striking. She was placed on bail for $1,000.

“I will never allow the safety of Northwest Floridians to be comprised. I will be pressing charges against this individual in order to uphold the civility our community deserves. Thank you to the Walton County Sheriff’s office for taking swift action,” Congressman Gaetz said.

The Resistance is an extreme liberal political movement in the United States that emerged in November 2016 to protest the presidency of Donald Trump. Over time, it evolved to encompass not only Democrats but also Independents and all who opposed Trump. Its members were known for their frequent use of Twitter.
