Calls Grow To Revoke Kaitlan Collins’ Press Pass After Recent Scuffles
Calls are growing online for the White House to revoke the press pass of 32-year-old Kaitlan Collins, the CNN wunderkind who hasn’t shied away from sparring with President Donald Trump to the point that observers say has grown just plain disrespectful.
Thursday’s press pool in the Oval Office devolved into crosstalk several times between Collins and Trump, who called the reporter a “friend of” President Joe Biden while answering her question on the Russia-Ukraine war.
“This should’ve been done by Biden years ago. This should’ve never been allowed to happen,” Trump said about the start of peace talks between the two nations. “I know he is a friend of yours,” Trump added, prompting laughter from other reporters in the room.
When Collins tried to cut in, Trump wasn’t having it. “That’s why nobody watches CNN anymore. Because they have no credibility,” he added.
It was the second time that afternoon that Collins was put in her place by Trump. Just minutes earlier, she had begun shouting a question at the president after he held up a new executive order implementing tariffs across Europe.
“Mr. President, you won the White House, in part, because of high inflation. If your tariffs make prices go up…” the CNN reporter got out before Trump cut her off. “Excuse me. We haven’t asked you to speak yet,” he said, shutting her down.
When Collins asked what Trump thought about Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), the formerly longtime majority leader, being the only Republican to vote against Tulsi Gabbard’s confirmation, Trump used the opportunity to knock Collins again while mocking McConnell.
“He had an ability to raise money because of his position as leader, which anybody could do… you could do it, and that’s saying a lot,” he told Collins.
By Friday, MAGA social media users were declaring that Collins should leave the West Wing and return to the studio.
While the overwhelming response to potentially kicking Collins from the White House was positive, some said that she is a great punching bag for the president and should be allowed to hang around for comedic relief.
“No, it’s hilarious how he goes off on her,” one user replied. “I think he handles her pretty well. He just needs to keep reminding her how rude she is,” another noted. Many others were quick to concur.
“How about a time-out in the corner for a few conferences first?” a third joked.
Even if Collins is allowed to remain, she’ll likely be kept on a short leash by a network already clamoring to get back into President Trump’s good graces. Jim Acosta, the former pugnacious press flak who covered the first Trump administration, recently resigned from the network after being assigned to the midnight television hour. According to insiders, network CEO Mark Thompson pulled Acosta from his two-year 10 a.m. slot out of fear he would antagonize the Trump administration.
Collins has risen the CNN ladder quickly and last year garnered both applause and scorn by colleagues for how she hosted a town hall with then-candidate Trump. During their time on stage, Trump was frequently allowed to voice his opinion on controversial matters, including J6 and his criminal trials, without much pushback from Collins.
