Carl Weathers’ official cause of death was released Friday, one week after the “Rocky” actor passed away in his sleep.

Weathers, whose lengthy film career included appearances in “Happy Gilmore,” “Predator,” “Toy Story 4,” died as a result of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, according to his death certificate obtained by The Blast.

Weathers, 76, passed away at his home in Venice, California on February 2 after battling the heart condition for years. The certificate listed his son, Matthew Weathers, as the person who notified authorities of his death.

The legendary actor’s passing was announced by his family in a statement last week. “We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Carl Weathers. He died peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, February 1st, 2024. … Carl was an exceptional human being who lived an extraordinary life,” reads the statement.“His legacy in film, television, the arts, and sports has made an indelible mark, earning recognition and admiration worldwide and across generations. He was dearly loved as a brother, father, grandfather, partner, and friend.”

Weathers — who starred as Rocky Balboa’s opponent Apollo Creed in the franchise’s first installment — went on to become Rocky’s trainer in subsequent films. His character currently lives on in the “Creed” franchise, with Michael B. Jordan portraying Apollo Creed’s son Adonis in a trilogy released this past decade.

’m so torn up I can’t even tell you. I’m just trying to hold it in because Carl Weathers was such an integral part of my life, my success, everything about it,” his “Rocky” co-star Sylvester Stallone said in a heartfelt tribute.“I give him incredible credit and kudos because when he walked into that room and I saw him for the first time, I saw greatness. But I didn’t realize how great. I never could have accomplished what we did with Rocky without him. He was absolutely brilliant.”

Prior to his passing, Weathers filmed a Super Bowl commercial with legendary NFL tight end Rob Gronkowski, which is set to air this weekend.
