Chilling Details Revealed From Superstar Singer’s Death: ‘Attempting To Escape’
Liam Payne, the One Direction singer whose deadly fall from a hotel balcony last month shocked the entertainment world, died while “attempting to escape” his room, according to investigators.
Payne, who died at 31 years old, was trying to use the hotel balcony as a means to escape his room when he fell to his death. Hotel staff who spoke with the New York Post confirmed that Payne made them aware of his attempt via a phone call to the front desk as he desperately sought help. The singer’s fearful final moments were compounded by a toxic cocktail of illicit substances in his body, according to an autopsy completed days after his death. He appeared to be heavily intoxicated when employees of the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires dragged him through the lobby, a disturbing scene captured on security cameras.

In past interviews, the One Direction frontman had expressed the onset of claustrophobia he feels while being holed up in hotel rooms, and he was likely in a heightened emotional state after being returned to his room. Video from the night of October 16th shows Payne becoming aggressive with staffers who later called emergency services to express their well-founded fear that he might climb out the balcony to escape his confines. “I don’t know whether his life may be in danger. He is in a room with a balcony, and, well, we’re a little afraid …” one hotel employee told first responders in a recorded call.
A subsequent report concludes that the hotel was clearly aware of the risk that Payne might try to flee his room by climbing over the balcony railing but ultimately chose to leave him isolated there. TMZ previously reported that Payne’s body was found with a strapped bag and a hat, neither of which he was carrying in the lobby prior to being returned to his room. The police report also estimates that Payne was attempting to lower himself down to a second-story balcony from the third-story room above, then planned to jump to the ground from the lower level.
Two days after his death, a hotel employee discovered a second bag tagged “for Liam” on the second-floor balcony where Payne first attempted to land and contained a plethora of pills and whiskey. Investigators believe the singer first threw down the bag before escaping his balcony. A coroner concluded that Payne was conscious enough to gather his mind-bending belongings but may have fallen unconscious shortly before falling to his death.
Hotel staff and managers have so far not been charged despite being informed of Payne’s intention to escape his room that night. Instead, authorities have charged a friend, a waiter, and the person who supplied him with the drugs, the outlet reported. Investigators continue to pore over hundreds of hours of security footage which they said indicates that Payne partied with prostitutes and went on a drug-fueled binge just hours before falling to his death.
