Members of the activist group Climate Defiance disrupted an awards ceremony honoring Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), resulting in several protesters being forcibly removed from the event in a chaotic encounter captured on video.

Video footage shared by the group on social media shows the protesters being tackled and pushed off the stage by attendees, creating a pile-up. The caption accompanying the video expressed the group’s motive: “We just shut down a gala honoring U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski. As Chevron’s top lobbyist gave her an award, we stepped in and stopped the ceremony. Respect us or expect us.”

The incident occurred during Thursday’s Bryce Harlow Foundation’s annual awards gala, where Murkowski was being recognized for her contributions to public service. The Alaska Senator was in the midst of her acceptance speech when approximately 10-12 demonstrators from Climate Defiance stormed the stage according to The Daily Beast.

The Bryce Harlow Foundation award, received by Murkowski, celebrates an elected official “whose career is built on championing the principles of integrity, dedication, and professionalism.” The award presentation was abruptly halted by the protesters, drawing attention to their cause but sparking widespread criticism for their methods.

“Known for her ability to work collaboratively and across the aisle to reach common sense solutions, Murkowski is a leader on energy and public lands issues, recognizing that sound national policy will promote job creation and economic growth, and higher standards of living and greater global stability,” the award site wrote.

The foundation, established in 1982, promotes ethical standards in lobbying and government relations through educational programs and an annual fellowship for students aspiring to careers in advocacy according to their site. It honors Bryce Harlow’s legacy by advocating integrity in professional advocacy and recognizing excellence in the field with annual awards.

Climate Defiance has stated that their drastic actions were a protest against what they perceive as the government’s inadequate response to climate change issues and the influence of corporate lobbying on environmental policies. The group particularly pointed out Murkowski’s connections with Chevron, whose lobbyist was reportedly presenting the award at the time of the interruption.

“Murkowski brands herself as a moderate but in truth she is an ecocidal pyromaniac. She fought tooth and nail to open up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to big oil,” the group tweeted in a thread on Thursday. “Is nothing sacred? Is nothing sacred?”

“Murkowski played a lead role in persuading Biden to approve the Willow Project. This monstrosity will transport 200,000 barrels of oil every single day. This is hideous. This is cruel and barbaric beyond description.”

“In 2017 Murkowski voted to confirm Scott Pruitt to the role of EPA Administrator. Pruitt is so cartoonishly evil that he was condemned by – wait for it – George W. Bush’s EPA chief. He is so cartoonishly corrupt he was ultimately fired by Donald Trump.”

They finished, “Murkowski claims to support climate legislation, but refused to step in and pass Build Back Better as Joe Manchin held the bill hostage for months. How does this woman sleep at night? How does she live with herself? Is there no limit to her depravity? Is there no limit?”
