College Football Player Dies After Collapsing During Season Opener
A Division II college football player died Saturday after collapsing on the field during his team’s season opener in Missouri.
William Jewell College running back MicahJo Barnett suffered a sudden medical emergency during the first quarter of the Cardinals’ game against Fort Lewis College, according to the school.
Paramedics rushed onto the field to treat Barnett before he was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
He had scored a touchdown earlier in the game.
Barnett’s exact cause of death has not been released.
The game was suspended following the horrifying scene as players, coaches and fans grappled with the sudden loss.
“William Jewell College and the Liberty, Missouri community mourn the passing of Micah Jo Barnett, a junior business administration and member of Jewell Cardinal football program and former Liberty North Eagle,” the school’s statement read. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Micah Jo’s family, our students, the Cardinal Football family, and the rest of our community during this time of loss.
“Students and staff are encouraged to connect with Counseling Services and/or the office of the Chaplain who are ready to provide support to those who need it.”

Barnett, a native of Liberty, Missouri, had already built an impressive football résumé before joining William Jewell.
He starred at Liberty North High School, helping lead the program to a state championship during his senior season.

Barnett piled up 1,450 all-purpose yards and 20 touchdowns that year, establishing himself as one of the team’s most dangerous offensive weapons.
He carried that success into college.
Barnett started five games for William Jewell last season and led the team in rushing yards before an injury cut his year short.
He returned for his junior season hoping to build on that performance and was back in the end zone during Saturday’s opener before the medical emergency unfolded.
The college announced that a vigil would be held on campus at 8 p.m. local time to honor Barnett and give students, teammates and members of the community a place to mourn together.
Fort Lewis College, which was playing William Jewell when Barnett collapsed, also released a statement mourning his death after the game was called off.
The tragedy has shaken the small college football community, particularly in Barnett’s hometown, where he was already well known from his championship run at Liberty North.
At just 20 years old, Barnett leaves behind a football career that had already included a state title, a breakout college season and the promise of much more ahead.
