Colin Hurley, a backup quarterback for LSU’s football team, was injured in a single-car crash near the university’s south gates early Thursday morning, according to officials. The incident occurred around 2:45 a.m. on South Quad Drive near Highland Road.

Hurley’s Dodge Charger reportedly collided with a tree, leaving him unresponsive but breathing when emergency responders arrived. Sources familiar with the situation told WBRZ that firefighters had to extract Hurley from the vehicle.

He suffered a significant cut on his face and was drifting in and out of consciousness before being transported to a hospital. The cause of the crash has not been disclosed, though authorities have stated that impairment is not believed to have been a factor.

The 17-year-old quarterback, a highly regarded recruit out of Jacksonville, Florida, enrolled early at LSU to prepare for his college football career. As of Thursday afternoon, there was no update on Hurley’s condition. LSU Athletics has not yet issued a statement on the incident.

Hurley made a remarkable varsity debut in eighth grade and came highly rated into LSU with four stars, ranking among the top 20 high school quarterbacks for this signing class. ESPN placed him as high as No. 14 in his position. His skills were showcased at the Elite 11 quarterback competition and the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

“I can’t wait to get on campus. Go and compete, learn and do the best I can do,” Hurley said before he came to campus. “He [Joe Sloan (Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks Coach] pushes me every day to be the best not only quarterback I can be, but the best person I can be. I can’t wait to go in there, do the best I can do and put forward the effort and time toward my team.”

As a freshman in 2021, he led his team to a state championship and was named Florida Class 2A Player of the Year. He was recognized on the 2023 Super 11 by the Florida Times-Union as one of the top 11 high school seniors in the state.

Over his high school career, he threw for more than 5,000 yards, completing 122 of 207 passes for 1,707 yards and 22 touchdowns in 2023 alone. His freshman year saw him throw for 2,146 yards and 24 touchdowns, capturing the Florida Class 2A state title.
