Conservative Billionaire Launches Effort To ‘Crush’ Liberal Media
Conservative activist Leonard Leo, the driving force behind the conservative movement to reshape the U.S. legal system, is now spearheading a $1 billion campaign to “crush liberal dominance” in corporate America, as well as in the nation’s media and entertainment industries.
Leo, known for his role in steering the Supreme Court rightward during Donald Trump’s presidency, said his non-profit group, the Marble Freedom Trust, is prepared to take on not only the government but also the private sector. “We need to crush liberal dominance where it’s most insidious, so we’ll direct resources to build talent and capital formation pipelines in the areas of news and entertainment, where leftwing extremism is most evident,” Leo said to the Financial Times.
“Expect us to increase support for organisations that call out companies and financial institutions that bend to the woke mind virus spread by regulators and NGOs, so that they have to pay a price for putting extreme leftwing ideology ahead of consumers,” he continued.
Leo is a significant figure in American conservative legal circles, known primarily for his influence in reshaping the U.S. judiciary. He is a lawyer and political consultant with deep ties to conservative advocacy, particularly in the judicial nomination process. Leo has played a crucial role in recommending and advancing conservative judges for federal courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court, through his work with the Federalist Society, a prominent legal organization that promotes originalism and textualism in judicial interpretation.

Leo’s influence was particularly noted during the presidencies of George W. Bush and Donald Trump. Under Trump, Leo was instrumental in the confirmation of three Supreme Court Justices—Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett—solidifying a conservative majority on the court. Beyond his work with the Federalist Society, Leo has also been involved in conservative political advocacy through his connections to various organizations that support conservative legal principles.
“The political environment is more topsy-turvy and more uncertain than it’s ever been in my lifetime,” Leo explained. “Political investing is not as good a bet as it used to be.”
In 2020, following Trump’s defeat, Leo reduced his day-to-day involvement in the Federalist Society, though he stayed on as co-chair. The next year, he launched Marble, backed by a substantial $1.6 billion from Barre Seid, a titan in electronic device manufacturing. Leo’s aim with Marble was to counteract what he described as the “dark money” of the left, he told the Financial Times. Over its initial three years, Marble reportedly expended around $600 million, as public records reveal.
Leo told the outlet that his objective was to discover “very leveraged, impactful ways of reintroducing limited constitutional government and a civil society premised on freedom and personal responsibility and the virtues of Western civilization.”
The formidable $1 billion operation now supports the conservative agenda against private institutions. It challenges diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, climate and social considerations in investments, and the “debanking” of politically conservative customers. This effort extends to the public sector as well. Over the next year, Leo plans to invest in a local media company in the U.S., though he hasn’t yet chosen which.
Additionally, he’s fostering conservative networks through entities like Teneo Network, a nationwide organization with chapters in various states. While Marble backs Trump-aligned advocacy groups, Leo clarified that it does not intend to influence the 2024 presidential election directly. Instead, the nonprofit is focusing on aiding Republican efforts to overturn the Democratic majority in the Senate.
