BREAKING: Dave McCormick Wins Pennsylvania Senate Race, Gives GOP Majority Another Flip

Published

on

Republican Senate candidate Dave McCormick has officially unseated three-term Senator Bob Casey (D-PA), expanding the Republican hold on the chamber even further after three pick-ups on Election Day. The Associated Press called the race shortly after 4 p.m. EST.

McCormick appeared poised for a victory on Election Night, though the race was not officially called until late Thursday afternoon after Philadelphia had exhausted its remaining ballots. Votes still to be counted primarily came from Cambria County, where voting hours were extended due to machine issues.

McCormick — who was narrowly defeated by Dr. Mehmet Oz in the Republican Senate primary for retiring Senator Pat Toomey’s seat in 2022 — was finally declared the winner nearly 48 hours after polls closed on Tuesday.

Senator Casey, along with fellow ousted Senators Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and Jon Tester (D-MT), was first elected in 2006, a highly successful midterm election for Democrats due to the unpopularity of then-President George W. Bush. The next two cycles were also favorable to Democrats with then-President Barack Obama on the ballot in 2012 and the “blue wave” midterm elections of 2018.

The party’s luck ran out on Tuesday, however, when President-elect Donald Trump became the first Republican to win the popular vote since 2004.

While Trump swept all seven battleground states — including the “blue wall” states of Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania — the Pennsylvania results produced perhaps the most astonishing totals for the president-elect. After narrowly winning the state in 2016, then losing it by 80,000 votes in 2020, Trump is currently ahead by a little more than 130,000 votes with more than 95 percent of ballots counted.

In addition to victories for Trump and McCormick, Pennsylvania Republicans managed to flip the state House and made massive gains in the Senate. The GOP also managed to flip multiple U.S. House races in the state.

Three-term incumbent Rep. Susan Wild (D-PA) was unseated by Pennsylvania State Rep. Ryan Mackenzie in the Keystone State’s 7th Congressional District, while six-term Rep. Matt Cartwright (D-PA) was defeated by businessman Rob Bresnahan in the 8th. Cartwright was the only member of the House Progressive Caucus who served in a district that voted for Trump in 2016 and 2020.

House Freedom Caucus member Scott Perry (R-PA) also fended off a fierce primary campaign from local news anchor Janelle Stelson in Pennsylvania’s 10th Congressional District. Perry was targeted by the Biden Administration due to his role in objecting to the presidential election results in 2020, leading to a subpoena from the Democrats’ January 6 Committee. The congressman’s cell phone was also confiscated by the FBI, while millions of dollars worth of outside funding poured into the race.
