Dems’ DHS Shutdown Backfires As Refusal To Fund Agency Causes Airport Chaos Nationwide

What started as another political fight in Washington is now hitting Americans where they feel it most—inside crowded airports, stuck in security lines that don’t seem to move.

The ongoing Department of Homeland Security shutdown has quickly turned into a nationwide travel mess, with delays, staffing shortages, and frustrated passengers piling up across the country. What was once a debate on Capitol Hill is now a real-world problem for millions just trying to get from point A to point B.

At the center of it all is the Transportation Security Administration, the agency responsible for keeping airports secure. With the shutdown dragging on, TSA workers have been going weeks without pay. That’s led to a growing number of officers calling out sick or walking away from the job altogether, leaving major airports short-staffed at the worst possible time.

The impact is hard to ignore. Some airports are seeing absentee rates spike into the double digits, and in certain locations, a significant chunk of the workforce simply isn’t showing up. That’s translated into massive backups at security checkpoints, with travelers waiting hours just to get through. In Atlanta, one of the busiest travel hubs in the world, passengers have already been warned to expect wait times of up to four hours.

“House Democrats shut down Homeland Security while TSA agents work for free and Americans sit in hours-long security lines,” National Republican Congressional Committee spokesperson Mike Marinella wrote Monday in a statement, as the group announced plans to go after Democrats in 28 districts hit hardest by security checkpoint delays.

The root of the crisis is a funding standoff in Congress that has left DHS partially shut down since mid-February. Lawmakers have been unable to reach a deal, largely over disagreements tied to immigration policy. Democrats have pushed for limits on enforcement agencies like ICE, while Republicans have rejected attempts to separate those policy fights from funding the department.

As the situation worsens, federal officials have tried to plug the gaps by bringing in ICE personnel to help at airports. But there’s only so much they can do. These agents aren’t trained to handle TSA screening, so their role is mostly limited to crowd control and basic support. Critics say that’s more of a band-aid than a real solution, especially as the number of unpaid TSA workers continues to grow.

“Democrats are being blamed by the American people for the catastrophe going on right now at our airports and at other points of transportation and beyond,” President Donald Trump told a Monday gathering focused on crime in Memphis, Tennessee. “And we want the public to know we’re not going to let them out of this trap that they created for themselves.”

Meanwhile, the effects are spreading fast. Security lines are spilling out of terminals, passengers are missing flights, and airlines are scrambling to adjust schedules during an already busy travel season. If the shutdown drags on much longer, officials have warned that some airports could face even more serious disruptions if staffing continues to drop.

More than 100,000 DHS employees are currently working without pay, including thousands of TSA officers on the front lines. As the financial pressure builds, more workers are expected to step away, which could make an already bad situation even worse.

“The Democrats’ reckless DHS shutdown is causing TSA officers to go without pay for the third time in nearly six months,” claimed Lauren Bis, Acting Assistant Secretary. “These political stunts are causing unneeded financial hardship for our TSA officers and their families. Now, 366 TSA officers have left the force. Because of this DHS shutdown, Americans are facing HOURS long waits at airports across the country. Democrats must reopen DHS now.”
