‘Done With This’: Pam Bondi Strikes Down Biden-Era Lawsuit

In a bold move aimed at reversing what she called politically motivated overreach, Attorney General Pamela Bondi on Monday dismissed a Biden-era lawsuit that targeted Georgia’s commonsense election law, Senate Bill 202.

The Department of Justice, under Bondi’s direction, formally dropped its case accusing Georgia lawmakers of racial discrimination in the 2021 legislation—claims that the new administration has deemed baseless and divisive.

“Contrary to the Biden Administration’s false claims of suppression, Black voter turnout actually increased under SB 202,” Bondi stated. “Georgians deserve secure elections, not fabricated claims of false voter suppression meant to divide us. Americans can be confident that this Department of Justice will protect their vote and never play politics with election integrity.”

The lawsuit was filed in response to Georgia’s election reform law passed in 2021. At the time, critics—including members of the Biden administration—referred to the law as “Jim Crow 2.0” and claimed it was a deliberate attempt to depress turnout among minority voters.

The controversy led to nationwide debates and corporate backlash, including Major League Baseball moving the 2021 All-Star Game out of Atlanta—a decision that reportedly cost the state over $100 million. The DOJ’s dismissal marks a change in tone from previous leadership.

The MLB announced in April 2021, that it would relocate the 2021 All-Star Game from Atlanta. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred stated that the decision was made to demonstrate the league’s values and its opposition to restrictions on voting rights.

In November 2023, MLB announced that Atlanta would host the 2025 All-Star Game, a move interpreted by some as an acknowledgment of the complexities surrounding the earlier relocation.

On Monday, acting Associate Attorney General and Department of Justice Chief of Staff Chad Mizelle stated clearly: “The Department of Justice is done with this disgrace.”

“There is nothing racist about protecting elections—baseless claims of Jim Crow-style discrimination are the real insult,” Mizelle said.

Supporters of SB 202 have pointed to its provisions as commonsense election safeguards, including requirements for photo identification for all forms of voting, changes to absentee ballot procedures, and mandates for faster reporting of election results.

“The Biden administration fabricated an untrue narrative following the passage of Senate Bill 202,” the press release said, noting that the lawsuit falsely claimed the law was “an intentional scheme to ‘depress the Black vote.’”

Under President Trump and Attorney General Bondi’s direction, the DOJ says it will now focus on “dismantling weaponized litigation and ensuring fair, lawful elections for all Americans.”

“Instead of wasting time on false, divisive lawsuits, the Department of Justice will continue to root out real discrimination, promote common-sense election safeguards, and ensure equality for every American,” the release stated.
