NEW: Philadelphia Eagles Would Be ‘Honored’ To Visit White House If Invited
The Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles are looking forward to visiting President Trump to the White House, numerous NFL and Eagles insiders reported Monday. The report comes just under 24 hours after a U.K.-based media outlet reported that the team would be declining the invite.
“To those wondering: Eagles sources say the team is planning on visiting the White House this off-season and looks forward to receiving its invitation,” ESPN insider Adam Schefter reported in an X post on Monday. Schefter’s report was further confirmed by Eagles beat reporter John Clark, who said the team will accept the president’s invitation if they are invited.
NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reported much of the same, stating that sources he spoke to told him the Eagles will be “honored” to visit the White House. “It’s one of the aspects of winning they are excited about and look forward to receiving the invitation,” he added.
The flurry of reports from the NFL’s most reputable insiders came a little under 24 hours after numerous Eagles fan pages and other prominent social media pages reported that the team would not be attending. In 2018, the Eagles opted to skip the White House after capturing their first Super Bowl win.
U.K.-based news outlet The Sun first reported that the Eagles would be skipping the White House visit once again, citing a “well placed insider.” The report was then shared by the official X page of the Eagles Nation blog, which boasts roughly 250,000 followers on the platform.
The @DailyLoud X page, a popular account that generally covers pop culture news, reported that the team had opted to “decline” the White House visit not long after the Eagles Nation post went live. The Daily Loud post, which was complete with a photo of Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts holding the Lombardi trophy, garnered north of 12 million views and more than 350,000 likes.
On Reddit, a post claiming that Eagles players and coaches voted to decline the visit became the most-liked post in the history of the site’s NFL subreddit,
President Trump opted to attend the Super Bowl LIX matchup between the Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs in New Orleans earlier this month. While Trump had previously indicated that he was rooting for the Chiefs and star quarterback Patrick Mahomes in the weeks leading up to the game, the president ultimately wished both teams well and heaped praise upon each roster.
“Two great Quarterbacks in this game. Also, an unbelievable running back, and the absolute best tight end in football (Ever!). Incredible coaching! If they would only get rid of that really weird looking new Kickoff ‘deal,’ which actually makes football more dangerous, they would be doing everybody, especially the fans, a big favor,” Trump wrote.
The Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers recently became the first “big four” professional sports team to meet with President Trump in his second term.
