Elon Musk Offers To Pay Salaries Of TSA Workers Amid Democrat-Led Shutdown
Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk indicated that he is willing to pay the salaries of TSA agents in response to the ongoing Democrat-led partial government shutdown, which has impacted the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for more than a month.
Senate Democrats opted to move forward with the shutdown on February 14 in hopes of obtaining “reforms” to federal immigration enforcement. In hopes of securing demands that would essentially end the process of deporting illegal aliens in the United States, the minority party moved to defund DHS despite the fact that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) are fully funded through 2029.
The ongoing shutdown has had massive impacts on other agencies under the DHS umbrella, however, including the U.S. Coast Guard and the Transportation Security Agency (TSA). More than 400 TSA agents have quit since the shutdown began, while hundreds of others have been forced to call out and work other jobs while their paychecks are withheld.
Roughly 50,000 TSA officers, designated as essential personnel, have continued working without pay. Federal law ensures back pay once funding is restored, but employees have already missed at least one paycheck
TSA impacts have led to extremely long wait times at some of the nation’s largest airports, a situation that is expected to get worse the longer Democrats refuse to fund the government.

On Saturday, Elon Musk weighed in on the situation and offered to help pay the salaries of TSA agents while the minority party holds them hostage.
“I would like to offer to pay the salaries of TSA personnel during this funding impasse that is negatively affecting the lives of so many Americans at airports throughout the country,” Musk posted on X.
The offer entails Musk or an associated entity assuming responsibility for TSA payroll costs while the funding standoff continues. He did not provide specifics on the delivery method or timetable, though such a move is not without precedent.
Implementation of the offer would face substantial legal and administrative requirements, however. The U.S. Constitution’s Appropriations Clause and statutes such as the Anti-Deficiency Act generally prohibit federal agencies from expending funds or accepting voluntary services absent explicit congressional authorization
One potential pathway involves Musk donating funds to the U.S. Treasury’s general account or a dedicated government fund. Congress would then need to enact legislation directing the appropriation of those resources specifically for TSA salaries.
Another approach could use an intermediary, such as a nonprofit entity, to provide advances or loans to employees that the government later reimburses upon funding restoration.
No precedent exists for an outside individual or entity funding an entire government agency, though a billionaire did offer to pay the salaries of active U.S. Military service members during the full Democrat-led government shutdown last year.
