‘FALSE IDOLS’: Man Confronts Comic-Con Attendees In Viral Interview

San Diego Comic-Con is known for blockbuster movie announcements, elaborate cosplay and packed convention halls, but a new viral street interview video is putting the spotlight on something else entirely: the intersection of pop culture, politics and identity.

Turning Point USA’s Frontlines team spent time outside the annual convention interviewing attendees about everything from cosplay and superheroes to President Donald Trump, gender identity and the role politics now plays in fan culture. The more than five-minute video quickly gained traction online as it showcased a wide range of opinions from convention-goers.

The segment opened with a street preacher criticizing the event, describing Comic-Con as an example of vanity and idol worship. Standing outside the convention, he argued that many attendees were spending thousands of dollars on costumes dedicated to fictional characters rather than focusing on faith.

“The Bible talks about vanity being a waste of time,” the preacher said. “Look at the people that are dressed up in costumes for thousands of dollars to follow false idols.”

Despite the criticism, many attendees said Comic-Con is simply an opportunity to celebrate hobbies they enjoy. One attendee wearing a furry costume explained that owning an expensive fursuit made the convention the perfect place to wear it.

“If you’re spending a couple thousand dollars on these, you’ve got to at least show them out at least once,” the attendee said.

Others embraced the playful atmosphere. One costumed participant joked that he had come “to slaughter,” while another dressed as a giant chicken said he was searching for Peter Griffin from the animated television series Family Guy.

The interviews shifted from costumes to broader cultural questions, with attendees asked whether they would rather live in fictional worlds like Star Wars than modern society.

Several respondents enthusiastically picked the galaxy far, far away, while another offered a more cynical answer.

“It’s all madness regardless, baby,” the attendee replied.

Politics quickly became one of the dominant themes. When asked who they considered the clearest villain in modern politics or culture, answers varied significantly.

Some respondents named President Donald Trump or his administration, while others pointed to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. One attendee answered that nearly every politician could fit the description, saying, “Honestly, probably most any politician you can name.”

The conversations also explored whether any political heroes remain.

Rather than naming an elected official, one attendee argued that ordinary citizens deserve that title.

“I’d say the people of all the countries, because the people are what make up the countries,” the attendee said. “We’re supposed to keep the government in check.”

One transgender attendee selected shape-shifting, explaining that the ability reflected feelings about identity and self-expression.

“I feel more comfortable even being transgender,” the attendee said, adding that certain anime and manga stories helped them better understand who they were growing up.

Another participant emphasized empathy as the superpower they believed would benefit humanity the most before joking that, on a personal level, they would rather become invisible.

Throughout the interviews, attendees repeatedly described Comic-Con as a place where people can express themselves without fear of judgment.

One participant defended that freedom directly.

“Anyone should be able to dress up the way they want,” the attendee said. “If you want to wear a skirt as a guy, go ahead and do it.”
