JUST IN: FBI Whistleblower Claims Director Wray Lied To Congress Under Oath

on

Steven Friend took to social media to declare that Christopher Wray, the director of the FBI, had lied to Congress. He did so over a number of tweets that explored a number of claims the director made. Mr. Friend’s comments on social media are particularly noteworthy given that he is an FBI whistleblower who testified to concerns over the bureau’s manipulation of its statistics on domestic extremism, over FBI tactics to apprehend January 6th rioter suspects, and over the bureau’s retaliation against him and his family for whistleblowing.

Mr. Friend posted yesterday that “The  [FBI] Director told [House Judiciary Committee] that special agents did not conduct surveillance of school boards. He lied. The Joint Terrorism Task Force in my office did it. I testified about the details in May.”

He further elaborated that ‘The [FBI] Director told [Representative Troy Nehls] that no agents were reassigned from child exploitation investigations to domestic terrorism. Another lie. I was reassigned from child pornography cases and told those cases were going to be considered a “local matter.'”

He responded to a comment that asked him what he thought about the ability of agents “to come forward and speak candidly” by remarking  “[t]he fact that I’m watching at home on my laptop instead of earning a living investigating child pornographers [which was his former role at the FBI] says it all.”

Mr. Friend is in effect observing what happened to himself when he did so and referenced how the bureau punished him. When another Twitter user attacked Friend by writing “Go get a job bro”, Friend retorted “Got one. Blessed to work with amazing, talented, and patriotic people at [the Center for Renewing America].”

When the FBI posted on Twitter its denial over assertions that investigating parents going to school board meetings and cited Wray’s testimony as evidence, Friend replied “[y]ou might want to retract and ask the [FBI Jacksonville] Daytona Beach Resident Agency Joint Terrorism Task Force.”

In effect, Friend was saying that Wray was lying during that particular bit of his testimony.

Former agent Friend also criticized other glib responses by Wray during his testimony before Congress. Friend wrote “Chris Wray dismissed public disapproval of his [FBI] by citing high numbers of job applicants. The American people are his customers. Does a restaurant owner disregard food poisoning reports because many people are applying to be waiters?”

When a Twitter user accused agents like Friend of being the reason for the bureau’s low public approval, Friend responded by observing that “I’m not an agent. The FBI removed me after I made legally protected whistleblower disclosures about risks to public safety. I’m happy with my reflection in the mirror, thank you.”
