Political hypocrisy is not a new phenomenon in Washington, D.C. but Joe Biden might take the cake for his flip-flop over border security. While Joe Biden is now allegedly selling off parts of the materials for the border wall amid Republican efforts to restart its building and an open border, he once boasted ahead of the 2008 election of his commitment to the border. Then Senator Joe Biden boasted in 2006, “I voted for a fence. I voted unlike most Democrats – and some of you won’t like it- I voted for 700 miles of fence…And let me tell you something, folks. People are driving across that border with tons, tons-hear me- tons of everything from byproducts for methamphetamine, to cocaine, to heroin. It’s all coming through corrupt Mexico.”
As commenter Kanekoa The Great observed, “President Biden [now] sells the border wall amid the worst illegal immigration and drug overdose crisis in American history [under his watch].”
The
material for the 30 foot-panels on the southern border was being sold on GovPlanet in beams of 5 batches averaging $212 each. Former president Trump had built 450 miles of barriers along the southern border during his time in office and was building another 250 miles of barriers. President Biden terminated the former president’s building projects upon ascent into office and derided it as a “waste of money that diverts attention from genuine threats to our homeland security.”
Biden’s policies have created a border crisis where record numbers of illegal immigrants now cross. One
CBS News commentator noted in 2022, “Law enforcement has already tallied more than 1.9 million migrant encounters this fiscal year, breaking the records set last year, with two months left to go.” An
ABC news commentator
even observed, “[that] it’s clear that process isn’t working, Border Patrol agents apprehending nearly 1,300 people a day in this area [in El Paso alone]. El Paso is now chartering their own buses to help migrants head north. … Volunteers make sure these families know where they’re going.”
President Biden has largely avoided going to the actual southern border. 9 months ago, the president, when pressed why he was not visiting these border areas,
responded that “there are more important things going on.” There were already over 2.3 million encounters with illegal immigrants in that fiscal year of 2022. Biden’s Homeland Security Secretary has also been
non-responsive to the crisis at hand. In fact, that same secretary has publicly
taken the view that being in the country illegally no longer warrants removal.
