Former MLB pitcher Juan Jaime has died at the age of 37 after suffering a heart attack.

News of Jaime’s death comes as a shock to fans of the Atlanta Braves where he played in the 2014 and 2015 seasons, according to the Daily Mail. The Dominican born right-hander fielded a total of 18 games in his MLB career before being traded into the L.A. Dodgers’ farm system as part of a six-player swap. He played internationally in Japan and Mexico before being released in 2017.

Renowned baseball journalist Héctor Gómez first reported on the passing of Jaime. MSN reporter Damián Rancez wrote that his time in the MLB “leaves behind a legacy of determination and passion that will not be forgotten… With perseverance and raw talent, he rose through the minor leagues and achieved his dream of playing in the MLB.”

“While his MLB career was brief, Juan Jaime’s impact on the game was undeniable. He was celebrated for his electrifying fastball, which often reached triple digits, and his resilience in overcoming challenges throughout his baseball journey. His love for the sport and dedication to representing his Dominican roots left a lasting impression on teammates and fans. Jaime’s untimely passing has deeply affected both the Dominican baseball community and the Atlanta Braves organization,” Rancez adds.

Braves fans rushed to offer their tributes to Jaime and lament the death of a promising young athlete, the latest in a string of several to die from heart conditions that leaves more questions than answers. “So young, may the good Lord be with the family and friends during their time of bereavement,” user Gregory Miller wrote on Newsbreak. Another asked for an explanation on Jaime’s condition while others offered speculation about his health. “Another young person died suddenly. What’s going on with the young athletes dying?” one asked. One user compared the fatality to the 1980 death of J. R. Richard while warming up before a Houston Astros game; the 30-year-old’s death was later revealed to be caused by a blood clot in his neck.

Jaime finished his MLB career wit a 5.93 ERA and a more favorable 4.38 FIP, the Mail stated. In 2014 he posted a 5.84 ERA in 16 relief appearances, before allowing one run in 1.1 innings over two appearances the following season. The Braves finished with losing records in 2014 and 2015.

A string of heart-related premature deaths among young athletes has left observers seeking answers about the uptick. Olympic judo wrestler Maricet Espinosa Gonzalez, 34, died after cardiac arrest following bizarre complications stemming from breast enhancement surgery undertaken in January 2024. In August, 15-year-old Jayvion Taylor of Virginia collapsed and died of a heart attack during football practice, the New York Post reported. Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin managed to survive a heart-related event during a 2023 game, but other, younger athletes weren’t so lucky. Matheus Pavlak, a 19-year-old Brazilian bodybuilder and social media influencer, died of a heart attack in September while 16-year-old judoka athlete María de Jesús (Jesusa) Mora of Cuba suffered a fatal heart attack in October.
