Dave Coulier, who played the affable family friend on “Full House,” announced on the “Today Show” that he is battling an aggressive form of cancer that is taking a toll on his health.

Coulier, 65, told viewers that five weeks ago he diagnosed with stage 3 non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a type of blood cancer that starts in the lymphatic system. “In that time I’ve had three surgeries. I’ve had chemo. I’ve lost a little bit of hair — I kind of look like a little baby bird now,” he joked. “But it has been a rollercoaster ride, for sure.” Asked about his prognosis, Coulier described his B-cell form of lymphoma as “aggressive” and a “gut punch” for himself and his wife Melissa.

“There’s still another hurdle: we had to find out what the staging was. And so they went into my bone marrow, and we got good news that day, once we got the results, that it hadn’t spread. And so at that point the curability rate went up to ninety-plus percent. So it’s very treatable,” he added.

Fans of “Full House” were charmed by Coulier’s portrayal of Joey Gladstone, a struggling comedian and best friend to patriarch Danny Tanner, played by Bob Saget who died in 2022 from a head injury sustained during a fall in his hotel room. The two men made magic on primetime TV, working with brother-in-law Jesse Katsopolis to raise the three Tanner daughters D.J., Stephanie, and Michelle, played by Candice Cameron Bure, Jodie Sweetin, and Ashley Olsen. “Full House” premiered in 1987, quickly shooting to the top of the charts and staying there until its final episode on May 23rd, 1995. The one-hour finale drew 24.3 million viewers, a record at the time.

Coulier and wife Melissa Bring vowed to be “strong” throughout his battle and fight the cancer “head-on.” “We all kind of put our heads together and said, ‘Okay, where are we going?’ And they had a very specific plan for how they were going to treat this,” he says, noting that a bright spot in his diagnosis was when his bone marrow test came back negative. “At that point, my chances of curable went from something low to 90% range. And so that was a great day.”

According to People Magazine, Coulier shaved his head as a “preemptive strike” against his chemotherapy, opening up further about how he’s dealt with the diagnosis during a recent episode of “Full House Rewind,” a podcast about the show hosted by Marla Sokoloff. “I started the podcast wearing a hat, and I said, I’ve always been a man of many hats, but this hat has special significance because a couple of weeks ago, I was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma,” he says of the debut episode where he opens up about his diagnosis. “That was really a conscious decision of, I’m going to meet this head-on, and I want people to know it’s my life. I’m not going to try and hide anything. I would rather talk about it and open the discussion and inspire people.”
