Michael Patrick, an Irish actor and writer who appeared on Game of Thrones, has died at 35 after battling Motor Neuron Disease, according to his wife.

Patrick died in hospice care in Northern Ireland, Naomi Sheehan wrote in an Instagram post Wednesday.

“Last night, Mick sadly passed away in the Northern Ireland Hospice,” Sheehan began. “He was diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease 1st February 2023. He was admitted 10 days ago and was cared for by the incredible team there. He passed peacefully surrounded by family and friends. Words can’t describe how broken-hearted we are.”

Motor Neuron Disease is an incurable neurological condition that attacks the nerves controlling movement, weakening and wasting muscles over time. Symptoms can affect walking, speaking, eating, drinking and breathing.

In her tribute, Sheehan said Patrick’s impact went far beyond his illness.

“It’s been said more than once that Mick was an inspiration to everyone who was privileged enough to come into contact with him, not just in the past few years during his illness but in every day of his life,” she wrote. “He lived a life as full as any human can live. Joy, abundance of spirit, infectious laughter. A titan of a ginger haired man.”

Sheehan thanked those who supported their family through the last two years, and closed with a quote Patrick loved.

“Mick loved this quote from Brendan Behan and this feels appropriate now: ‘The most important things to do in the world are to get something to eat, something to drink and somebody to love you.’ So, don’t overthink it. Eat. Drink. Love. Naomi — Mick’s wife.”

Patrick’s final social media post came earlier this year, when he shared that his neurologist had estimated he had one year left.

“still lots to live for and lots planned,” he wrote.

Patrick had credits beyond Game of Thrones, including roles in Blue Lights and This Town. He also co-wrote the BBC series My Left Nut, based on his teen years, and appeared in projects including Blasts from the Past and The Spectacular.

His most recent on-screen work was the German TV movie Mordlichtern- Tod auf den Färöer Inseln, which premiered in 2025.

Patrick’s IMDb biography notes he began acting at the University of Cambridge, performing with the Cambridge Footlights comedy troupe, and later trained at the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London.
