Gavin Newsom Bends The Knee To Trump With Major Move
Even Gavin Newsom, the ultra-liberal governor of California, is bending to the bill of President Donald Trump these days.
Newsom, long seen as a future presidential contender, took the almost unheard-of step of vetoing legislation by a fellow state Democrat that would have directly conflicted with new rules promulgated by the Trump administration. Had he soldiered on, Gov. Newsom would have risked not only federal dollars flowing to California’s economy but also federal immigration officials cleaning up the streets of its many sanctuary cities.
When a local lawmaker introduced a bill to prohibit any local police department from honoring a detainer request by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Newsom announced he would be vetoing it. His decision comes one day after U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi declared the Justice Department would sue New York state and Governor Kathy Hochul to force compliance with federal immigration law.
“This is a new DOJ and we are taking steps to protect Americans,” she said. “It stops today.”
California’s latest immigration legislation is almost identical to a bill filed during the last session, which Newsom said would interfere with “a federal law enforcement agency charged with assessing public safety risks.”
Provisions in the bill would prevent local authorities from sharing an inmate’s release date if ICE sought to intervene after they were set free following a crime. Authorities would also be prohibited from coordinating with ICE to hand over an inmate in custody.
President Trump campaigned on conducting the “largest mass deportation program in history,” and many of California’s localities are ground zero for the crisis. White House border czar Tom Homan has promised to ferret out leaks at the Federal Bureau of Investigation, where he claims word got out that authorities were ramping up to conduct a major raid across Los Angeles later this month.
“Sanctuary cities are putting roadblocks up, we got leaks,” Homan said on Fox News earlier this week. “So, we need to increase the arrests of illegal aliens, especially those with criminal convictions. So, we’re going to continue. So, three times higher is good. The numbers are good. For me, not good enough. We’ve got to get more.”
New regulations allow ICE officials to conduct activities at previously prohibited “sensitive” areas like churches and schools.
“This action empowers the brave men and women in CBP and ICE to enforce our immigration laws and catch criminal aliens – including murderers and rapists – who have illegally come into our country,” the Department of Homeland Security said in a statement to the Daily Mail.
Gov. Newsom, a favorite foil of the president’s whom he has nicknamed “Newscum,” already has plenty on his plate in his dealings with the Trump administration. Following last month’s devastating wildfires, he bore the blame from Trump over fire hydrants running dry. Additionally, Trump blamed Newsom for working with the Biden administration to repeal water regulations, which would ostensibly have helped douse the blazes that consumed over 11,000 structures in greater L.A.
“Trump is either unaware of how water is stored in California or is deliberately misleading the public,” Newsom told the outlet in response to Trump’s accusation. “There is no imaginary spigot to magically make water appear at a wildfire, despite what Trump claims.”
