Beloved GOP Rep. Threatened With Coffin On His Doorstep
A member of the GOP U.S. House caucus briefly became the center of national attention on Wednesday after far-left protestors sent him a threatening message by leaving a coffin on the doorstep of his home.
The stunt, captured on video, underscores how lawmakers are increasingly finding their lives in danger this year following several high-profile shootings and other forms of attack. The threats became very real for Congressman Bryan Steil (R-WI) when a band of silver-haired seniors imitated a funeral procession up his driveway before dropping the faux coffin and flowers at his front door.
Steil, the House Administration Committee Chair, was the target of outrage over government cuts in the Big, Beautiful Bill passed earlier this month. Among the protestors spotted on film was former Walworth County Democrat Party Chairwoman Ellen Holly, who posted a picture of the upright coffin on social media.
A sign affixed to its lid reads: “Here lie the hopes of the most vulnerable killed by the ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ signed into law by President Donald J. Trump and endorsed by Lyin’ Bryan Steil. RIP Democracy 1776-2025.”
The mock funeral was sponsored by the Southern Wisconsin Grassroots Network and Working Families Party, which live-streamed the “Death of Democracy” event on Facebook. One commenter asked for the lawmaker’s address.
In the video, a participant can be heard saying, “We’re not going to hang out here because we’re not going to invite the police to come and ask questions, and say, ‘What are you doing here, blah, blah, blah.’ We’re just going to get out of town.”
After dropping the cardboard coffin at Steil’s house, some of the members could be seen walking across his lawn, forgoing the sidewalk, and commenting about the potential for more photographs of his house.

U.S. Capitol Police are reportedly aware of the protest, but it’s unclear if an investigation has been launched or if any of the protestors will face criminal trespassing charges.
“It’s disappointing that Democrat leadership and the radical left resort to these type of tactics,” Steil said, the NY Post reported. “I remain committed to my work to get this country back on track and will not be deterred by their threats.”

Ravi Mangla, National Press Secretary for Working Families Power, issued a fiery statement accusing Steil of passing federal laws more dangerous than the group’s protest.
“17 million Americans are going to lose life-saving medical care because of Bryan Steil’s vote,” Mangla wrote in a statement. “Frankly, that’s a far scarier thing than a group of seniors holding some taped together cardboard.”
Members of Congress have reported a 93.8% in threats to their safety, according to the outlet. The rise has resulted in new allocations for security budgets for each lawmaker.
Earlier this week, a local lawmaker in New Jersey was doused in gasoline and set on fire. And just this month, an assassin killed a Minnesota lawmaker and her husband and nearly killed another state senator and his wife.
