GOP Rep. Files For Divorce After Rumors Of Affair With Congresswoman Surface

A fit-for-television drama between politicians is reportedly unfolding in the halls of Congress. Rep. Rich McCormick (R-GA) has officially filed for divorce after rumors linking him romantically to fellow House member Rep. Beth Van Duyne (R-TX) surfaced. The news comes amidst accusations of an affair that supposedly began over a year ago, adding personal drama to the already high-stakes political arena.

Earlier this month, McCormick, 55, made the difficult decision to legally separate from Debra Miller, his wife of 12 years, as Gwinnett County court records confirmed. The filing was accompanied by a mutual restraining order, a common procedure in divorce cases in the area, setting the stage for a contentious split. Multiple sources have confirmed the divorce to The New York Post as well.

The rumor mill began churning in January when reports claimed that McCormick and Van Duyne, 53, were more than just colleagues. Since then, reports of their closeness have become a staple of Capitol Hill gossip. Allegedly, the duo was spotted holding hands discreetly during a Republican Study Committee lunch, an event that supposedly confirmed their intimate relationship to several onlookers.

Van Duyne shared with The DailyMail on Friday that Rich and his wife are “incredible people” and that his marriage has been “over for quite some time.” McCormick subsequently confirmed his relationship with Van Duyne via a spokesperson. “I’m single. We’re both parents of adult children and empty nesters. We are happily engaged in a relationship and beyond that it’s a personal issue.”

McCormick, who is a year and a half into his first congressional term, filed for divorce from his wife of 12 years, oncologist Dr. Debra Miller, on May 3. Additionally, a mutual restraining order was put in place, as reported by DailyMail on Thursday.

McCormick and Miller, his second wife, have seven children together and reside in Suwanee, Georgia. Miller, who has been practicing medicine for over 30 years, is known for her long, blonde hair, which notably resembles that of Van Duyne.

“Rich clearly has a type,” a source close to the congressman said. When asked about the reasons for the divorce, Miller messaged the DailyMail: “I’m sure that he will not be forthcoming.” Miller, for her part, has suggested that her husband might not be forthcoming about the reasons for their divorce. When pressed, she cryptically remarked, “You should ask Rich and his colleague,” hinting at the alleged affair.

A third witness informed the outlet that they observed Van Duyne clinging to McCormick’s arm while exiting the Longworth Office building late at night.

The first-term congressman has found his legislative work overshadowed by personal controversies. Last year, he was accused by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) of physical aggression during a heated exchange over political resolutions, although McCormick has denied the allegations, describing his actions as an attempt to encourage his colleague in a friendly manner. Greene disclosed to House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) that she was forcefully shaken by a colleague—a gesture he claimed was merely an attempt at encouragement in the heat of a legislative battle. McCormick swiftly offered his apologies following the contentious exchange over differing censure resolutions.
