GOP Rep. Moves To Impeach Beloved Trump Official

Republican Rep. Thomas Massie is escalating his fight with the Trump administration, introducing a privileged resolution Tuesday to impeach Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over the ongoing U.S. military campaign in Iran.

The Kentucky Republican accused Hegseth of defying Congress and continuing military operations without proper congressional authorization.

Because Massie’s resolution is privileged, House leadership must address it within two legislative days. Republican leaders could allow the matter to proceed to a vote or move to table it.

The impeachment push faces an uphill battle in the GOP-controlled House, but it could still force Republican lawmakers to publicly take a position on Hegseth’s handling of the conflict.

Massie did not give Republican leadership advance notice before introducing the resolution.

The eight-article measure focuses heavily on Congress’ constitutional authority over war and accuses Hegseth of continuing military operations in Iran despite congressional efforts to end U.S. involvement.

Massie argued Hegseth’s actions “frustrated Congress’s ability to exercise its most solemn constitutional responsibility” and allowed an “unlawful war” to continue.

“In all of this, Secretary Hegseth has acted in a manner contrary to his trust as Secretary of Defense,” Massie said on the House floor.

The resolution also targets Hegseth over U.S. military operations in Venezuela and Yemen.

Among the allegations is Massie’s claim that Hegseth improperly directed the operation that led to the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro without receiving authorization from Congress.

The impeachment effort marks another major break between Massie and the Trump administration over the president’s use of military power.

Thomas Massie has spent months pushing to limit the administration’s authority to continue military operations in Iran without further approval from Congress.

The House previously passed war powers resolutions in June and July aimed at restricting U.S. involvement in the conflict, with Massie joining Democrats and several Republicans in supporting the measures.

Lawmakers are also scheduled to consider another Iran war powers resolution Tuesday.

Pete Hegseth has already faced impeachment pressure from Democrats.

House Democrats introduced a separate impeachment resolution earlier this year accusing the defense secretary of misconduct that included allegedly participating in an unauthorized war against Iran.

Massie’s move is notable because the latest challenge is coming from inside Hegseth’s own party.

Republican leaders now face a procedural decision over whether to allow the impeachment resolution to receive a full House vote or quickly move to table it.

No impeachment vote had taken place as of Tuesday afternoon.
