Ron DeSantis announced recently that his wife, Casey DeSantis, has been undergoing cancer treatment. Speaking on that issue about five months ago, Governor DeSantis said:
“I am saddened to report that Florida’s esteemed First Lady and my beloved wife has been diagnosed with breast cancer. As the mother of three young children, Casey is the centerpiece of our family and has made an impact on the lives of countless Floridians through her initiatives as First Lady.”
“As she faces the most difficult test of her life, she will have not only have my unwavering support but the support of our entire family, as well as the prayers and well wishes from Floridians across our state. Casey is a true fighter, and she will never, never, never give up.”
Well, as he predicted, Casey didn’t give up; rather, she battled cancer and won, for now at least. Watch Governor DeSantis happily announce that here:
As you can hear in the video, DeSantis said ”
“Hi, this is Governor Ron DeSantis. I have a positive update about my wife Casey DeSantis. After going through both treatment and surgery for breast cancer, she is now considered cancer free.
All of you who have given thoughts and prayers to my family and my wife, thank you. It’s lifted her spirits and made a tremendous difference.
For all the women out there who are going through breast cancer right now – you can overcome this. I know it’s very difficult, but my wife is proof positive, and this is the exact type of news we had hoped for.
She still has more to do, but I’m confident she’s going to make a full recovery. Thank you for all your thoughts and prayers. God Bless you all.”
Similarly, Casey DeSantis took to Twitter to confirm what her husband announced and thank everyone for their support, saying:
“There are no words to express how truly blessed, grateful and humbled I am to hear the words cancer free. To those who are in the fight, know there is hope. Have faith and stay strong.”

That’s great news for the DeSantis family and, though perhaps ghoulish to note the political implications, it will likely give DeSantis more time to focus on his 2022 race as the campaign season heats up.
However it impacts the campaign and while it was certainly quite scary for the DeSantis family, the diagnosis did bring out the best in many Floridians, helping them show a bit of humanity in a contentious time.
Even DeSantis’ 2022 opponent, Nikki Fried, gave a word of encouragement to Casey DeSantis, saying “Our hearts are with Florida’s First Lady Casey DeSantis and her family. We are all praying for you!” on Twitter.
Similarly, another Democrat, Rep. Stephanie Murphy, wrote “Sending my support and prayers to Florida’s First Lady Casey DeSantis, Governor DeSantis, and their entire family“We’re all in your corner.”
So, though politics are contentious, at least everyone was able to show a bit of humanity and, even better, it looks like all those well wishes worked, as she’s now cancer free!
