Jasmine Crockett Hit With New Scandal After Resurfaced Post ‘Undercuts’ Her ‘Non-Apology’
“Squad” Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) found the hole she’s stuck in dug even deeper on Wednesday as critics resurfaced posts that confirmed her derogatory statements about disabled Texas Governor Greg Abbott weren’t a one-off.
The wheels fell off Crockett’s reputation earlier this week when a video emerged of a recent appearance where she appeared to mock the Republican executive for being confined to a wheelchair. The quip, made before a friendly audience, was excused by Crockett one day later in a “non-apology” which claimed she wasn’t referring to Abbott at all when she called him “Governor Hot Wheels.”
“Y’all know we got Governor Hot Wheels down there – come on now! And the only thing hot about him is that he is a hot a** mess, honey,” Crockett said during a fundraising dinner for the progressive Human Rights Campaign organization.
By Tuesday morning, the Texas Democrat sounded less than contrite in a social media statement where she claimed the nickname actually referred to the “planes, trains, and automobiles he used to transfer migrants” into majority-black communities around the country.
“Literally, the next line I said was that he was a “Hot A** Mess,” referencing his terrible policies. At no point did I mention or allude to his condition. So, I’m even more appalled that the very people who unequivocally support Trump—a man known for racially insensitive nicknames and mocking those with disabilities—are now outraged,” she added.
However, it’s since been reported that “Governor Hot Wheels” was a popular pejorative within Texas Democratic circles for some time and that Crockett’s caustic joke was simply the first time it gained national attention. Indeed, social media posts dating back to 2021 included the nickname and were being “liked” by Crockett, according to the Washington Free Beacon.
“Hot wheels [is] something else,” an Abbott critic wrote on Facebook that year. The comment was given a thumbs-up emoji by Crockett’s account.
Later that month, the “Squad” congresswoman hearted a comment which read “When I say I sick of hot wheels….I am SICK OF HIM.” She did the same to a fan who wrote on her page, “Keep Gov Hot Wheels Mad.”
Abbott, first elected in 2014, is only the third governor in U.S. history to use a wheelchair in office. He was paralyzed in 1984 while attending law school when a large oak tree snapped and fell on him, breaking his back and rupturing internal organs.
Critics of Crockett are continuing to elevate her original comment, and some online are questioning why mainstream media outlets aren’t covering it after devoting barrels of ink to President Trump’s alleged mockery of a disabled reporter in 2016.
Even before the congresswoman’s remarks on Saturday, it was becoming clear that the pressure of being powerless during the second Trump administration is grinding on her. She appeared to assault a conservative journalist on Tuesday after the young man asked whether she condoned the nationwide acts of vandalism against Tesla cars and dealerships.
In a clip of the interaction, Crockett grabs at the reporter’s phone, pushing it away from her and masking the camera.
