Jasmine Crockett Under Fire After Admitting Her Only Qualification Was Her Race: ‘I Had No Experience!’

“Squad” Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) made a startling admission on Wednesday, claiming she applied for her first job as a lawyer based on her race and little else.

Crockett, who is black, has for weeks been at the center of a sizable media firestorm after she used a pejorative nickname for Texas Governor Greg Abbott, a Republican who uses a wheelchair. Amid seeking to clarify her remarks and achieve distance from them, the Texas Democrat found time to wax philosophic about her time as a public defender, a position she held despite having “no criminal defense experience.”

“I walked in, and I told my boss Charlie, ‘Listen, you should hire me.’ He said, ‘Why?’ I said, ‘Because I’m black,'” she said at a recent committee hearing.

Crockett added that the attorney “looked at me like I was crazy.”

Crockett, just elected to her second term, earned her law degree in 2006 from the University of Houston Law Center, quickly passing the Texas bar and going on to work as a public defender in Bowie County. There, she honed a reputation for taking on pro bono cases involving Black Lives Matter protestors charged with criminal behavior.

Running in part on her record as a criminal justice reformer, Crockett was first elected in 2022 after former Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson announced she would not seek reelection. With the help of a super PAC funded by disgraced crypto titan Sam Bankman Fried, she defeated an aide to Rep. Marc Veasey (D-TX).

She faced only nominal opposition in 2024 in the form of a third-party challenger.

The air of entitlement has grown around Crockett, one of the progressive Squad’s most outspoken members who appears to relish her public sparring with MAGA conservatives like Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA). But in some cases, her alacrity for fighting words has gotten her into deeper trouble.

The lawmaker was forced to issue a vague apology after referring to Gov. Abbott as “Governor Hot Wheels,” a term that appeared to be known to her as early as 2021 based on past social media posts she had interacted with. Crockett claimed the nickname referred to the “planes, trains, and automobiles” being used by Abbott to send migrants to Democratic bastions around the country.

When a conservative journalist attempted to ask Crockett if she stood by statements that appeared to express support for vandalism of Tesla vehicles, she grabbed at the reporter’s camera in a hallway confrontation.
