JD Vance Goes Viral For Blistering Response To Tim Walz

Republican JD Vance (R-OH) threw a punch at Democratic rival Tim Walz (D-MN) for misrepresenting his military service in the latest flare-up of the vice-presidential campaign. Vance’s jab comes at a time while both candidates are under the intense pressure that accompanies a presidential race.

During a speech to the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, Walz, recently tapped as Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate, sought to bolster his credentials amid swirling accusations. “In 2005, I felt the call of duty again, this time of being serviced to my country in the halls of Congress. My students inspired me to run for that office, and I was proud to make it to Washington,” Walz stated.

“I was a member of the Veterans Affairs Committee and a champion of our men and women in uniform. I am damn proud of my service to this country. And I firmly believe you should never denigrate another person’s service record. To anyone brave enough to put on that uniform for our great country, including my opponent, I just have a few simple words. I just have a few simple words. Thank you for your service and sacrifice.”

Vance, not missing a beat, took to X to voice his critique. “Hi Tim, I thank you for your service. But you shouldn’t have lied about it. You shouldn’t have said you went to war when you didn’t. Nor should you have said that you didn’t know your unit was going to Iraq. Happy to discuss more in a debate,” Vance wrote.

Vance has escalated his criticism of Harris’ running mate, prompting a swift response from Democrats who have rallied in support of the Minnesota governor. Both Vance and Walz have “served” —the former as a U.S. Marine Corps officer and the latter in the National Guard. Veterans and military personnel often adhere to a strict code that values straightforwardness and honesty about one’s service. Missteps in how service is presented can attract fierce criticism, as seen in Walz’s case.

“He has not spent a day in a combat zone,” Vance told reporters about Walz in Michigan last Wednesday. “Do not pretend to be something that you’re not … I’d be ashamed if I was him and I lied about my military service like he did.”

Vance served in the United States Marine Corps, which significantly shaped his early career and personal development. His time in the military included responsibilities like managing and handling media relations and other communication tasks, which were pivotal during his unit’s deployment to Iraq. Vance’s military service is a central aspect of his memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy,” where he discussed how his experiences in the Marine Corps helped him develop discipline and provided him with the educational opportunities that eventually led him to study at Ohio State University and Yale Law School.

Wednesday’s political trail will continue to be ablaze with action as Vance steps up to the mic in Michigan, while Walz swings through Denver before landing in Boston.
