JD Vance’s ‘Hillbilly Elegy’ Reaches #1 On Amazon’s Best Sellers List
On the first day of the Republican National Convention, former President Donald Trump unveiled his choice of J.D. Vance (R-OH), as his vice-presidential candidate. The announcement, posted on Trump’s preferred social media platform, Truth Social, ignited a renewed interest in Vance’s work propelling “Hillbilly Elegy” to the top spot on Amazon’s bestseller list.
The selection of Vance, a Marine veteran and a first-time entrant on a presidential ticket, was a move within the Republican Party aiming to attract voters from the Rust Belt states—a region that resonates well with the themes of Vance’s memoir. “Hillbilly Elegy” offers a deep dive into the struggles and resilience of the working-class population in Appalachia, providing insight into the lives that many feel have been overlooked by mainstream politics.
Following Trump’s announcement on July 15, Vance formally accepted the nomination on July 17, during the convention. His acceptance speech, infused with references to his personal journey as detailed in his book, struck a chord with many attendees. Vance’s narrative of overcoming adversity and his commitment to addressing the issues facing the working class have made him a compelling figure in the political arena.
The memoir by Vance delves into his upbringing in the Appalachian region, specifically in Ohio and Kentucky. The book, first published in 2016, offers a personal narrative and analysis of the white working-class community. Vance’s story is one of personal triumph over adversity, as he navigates a tumultuous family life marked by poverty, addiction, and instability, ultimately ascending to Yale Law School. The memoir has resonated as a sociological exploration and a commentary on the American Dream, exploring themes of social decay, cultural norms, and the impact of economic hardship.
The book gained widespread attention for its insights into a segment of the population that played a significant role in the political landscape, particularly during the 2016 U.S. presidential election. “Hillbilly Elegy” has been praised for its candid and thoughtful examination of the struggles faced by the working class.
At the time Vance earned the title of #1 New York Times bestseller, capturing significant acclaim and endorsements from prominent publications. Described by The Economist as possibly “the most important book about America you will read this year,” it garnered attention for its insights into American society. The Wall Street Journal also praised it as “a riveting book,” while David Brooks of the New York Times labeled it “essential reading.”
This July, Trump wrote on Truth Social during the RNC: “After lengthy deliberation and thought, and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States is Senator J.D. Vance of the Great State of Ohio.”
On Thursday, Trump reiterated his endorsement of Vance, telling Fox News, “Vance was doing a great job.” He further praised Vance, stating, “He is fantastic. No, it wouldn’t have mattered,” when questioned whether the candidacy of Vice President Harris would have influenced his strategy.
