John Fetterman Stuns ‘The View’ Hosts, Says Trump’s New York Case Was Politically-Driven
In a rare moment of bipartisanship, Senator John Fetterman, a Democrat from Pennsylvania, shocked the hosts of ‘The View’ on Monday when he equated the recent legal battles of Donald Trump and Hunter Biden, labeling both as “politically motivated.” Fetterman even went as far as to say that pardons would be “appropriate” in both cases.
The conversation started with Behar pressing Fetterman on President Joe Biden’s controversial decision to pardon his son, Hunter, who faced sentencing this month for federal tax and gun convictions.
“Well, I think it’s undeniable that the case against Hunter Biden was really politically motivated,” Fetterman began. “But I also think it’s true that the trial in New York for Trump—that was political as well too. And in both cases, I think a pardon is appropriate.”
“I really think collectively, you know, America’s confidence in these kinds of institutions has been damaged by these kinds of cases,” Fetterman continued. “We cannot allow these kinds of institutions to be weaponized against our political opponents, and it’s very clear both trials were politically motivated and weaponized.”

President Joe Biden’s pardon of his son has sparked significant controversy. Hunter Biden, who had pleaded guilty to two federal misdemeanor counts of failing to pay taxes and a felony gun charge, now avoids a legal sentence. The president’s move was seen by some as a father’s act of compassion, but many across the aisle called it an abuse of power.
In contrast, Donald Trump, the former president and current President-elect, was convicted in May on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records related to hush-money payments during the 2016 election. Trump has maintained his innocence, calling the case a “witch hunt” orchestrated by political rivals.
Many Democrats had been fiercely critical of Trump’s legal troubles, using them as a rallying cry ahead of the 2024 election. On Wednesday, Charlamagne tha God, host of ‘The Breakfast Club,’ confronted Whoopi Goldberg, a co-host of ‘The View,’ over her defense of the president’s decision.
“I think all of the criticism is valid because, you know, Democrats stand on this moral high ground all the time. And, you know, they act so self-righteous,” Charlamagne said, adding that Biden “didn’t have to volunteer that lie to begin with.”
“The moral high ground is nobody’s above the law!” Charlamagne later added.

On Sunday, Biden issued a full and unconditional pardon covering all federal offenses committed by Hunter between January 1, 2014, and December 1, 2024. In his official statement, he claimed that his son was “selectively, and unfairly, prosecuted,” attributing the legal actions to political motivations.
President-elect Trump criticized the pardon, describing it as “an abuse and miscarriage of Justice!” Biden’s full and unconditional pardon of his son has set a significant precedent that Trump could potentially leverage. This could include individuals involved in the January 6 Capitol breach, as Trump has previously indicated intentions to pardon those convicted in connection with the incident.
In his first term, Trump granted clemency to associates like Michael Flynn, Roger Stone, Paul Manafort, and Steve Bannon, but those pardons were tied to specific charges.
