JUST IN: Aging Congresswoman Suffers Fall On House Floor While Protesting ‘BBB’

An elderly Democratic congresswoman took a nasty spill on the floor of the U.S. House Thursday morning while in the middle of railing against passage of the “big, beautiful” tax cut bill.

Illinois Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), no spring chicken at 81 years old, reportedly fell while parroting party lines about President Donald Trump’s “big, ugly bill” during a floor debate that followed all-night negotiations. Lawmakers have now been up for hours or days on end, operating under Trump’s July 4 deadline to bring the bill to his desk.

Schakowsky’s speech came shortly before a blustery, hourslong filibuster by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), who invoked the so-called “magic minute” rule to talk endlessly, but only as long as he remains standing and in the presence of his speech. Jeffries and aides reportedly placed several thick binders in front of him, each containing portions of the remarks he continues to give.

He has been speaking since 5 a.m. EST, according to Fox News.

The age of Washington, D.C. lawmakers has been a persistent focus for the public and mainstream media since former President Joe Biden’s disastrous 2024 debate and subsequent decision to end his reelection bid. Incidents like Schakowsky’s fall continue to keep the difficult topic front and center in the midst of a grueling legislative session.

Earlier this year, Schakowsky announced she would not seek reelection in 2026. She has served in the U.S. House of Representatives since winning her first bid for federal office in 1998.

For seven years prior, the Democrat was a state-level lawmaker in Illinois.

Voting at all hours of the day and night has taken its toll on other colleagues of both parties.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) almost missed his first opportunity to pass the One Big Beautiful Bill Act in May when Rep. Andrew Garbarino (R-NY), 40, fell asleep at his desk and missed the narrow vote.

Days earlier, Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-MI), 71, fell asleep in the middle of a committee hearing that convened shortly after 9 a.m.

Despite her age, Schakowsky spent part of Wednesday filming an incendiary message for social media.

“I’m not just a no on Trump’s Big Ugly Bill, I’m a HELL NO!” she wrote on X.

“This is going to be the most hideous vote that the Republicans are putting forward that would absolutely take healthcare away from literally millions of people. Why? Because they want to be able to provide more money, more wealth to the richest people in the United States of America,” railed Schakowsky.

“When the bill comes up, consider it a crime scene!” she said with bravado and hands on her hips.
