JUST IN: Another Key Democrat Flips, Publicly Endorses Mike Rogers In Michigan

Republican Mike Rogers has picked up another Democratic endorsement in Michigan’s Senate race, with former Rep. Hansen Clarke backing his one-time House colleague ahead of Tuesday’s election.

Rogers announced Clarke’s support on Facebook, giving the Republican another crossover endorsement as Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed contends with divisions inside his own party.

“I’m honored to have Congressman Clarke’s endorsement,” Rogers wrote.

“We served together in the House, and although we didn’t agree on everything, we always agreed to put Michigan first. His support in this race is no different.”

Rogers finished with a blunt message: “We have a state to save, Michigan.”

Clarke represented Michigan’s Detroit-based 13th Congressional District as a Democrat from 2011 to 2013. He previously served in the Michigan House and state Senate.

His support adds to Rogers’ crossover backing after Democratic Rep. Haley Stevens endorsed the Republican on Sunday, breaking with El-Sayed just two days before voters head to the polls.

Stevens, who lost to El-Sayed in the Democratic Senate primary, appeared alongside Rogers at Detroit’s Perfecting Church. Her endorsement followed a public dispute with El-Sayed over an outside group’s advertisement that she characterized as antisemitic.

The endorsements give Rogers support from both a sitting Democratic congresswoman and a former Democratic congressman as he seeks to flip the seat held by retiring Democratic Sen. Gary Peters.

The contest could help determine control of the Senate, making the late Democratic split a problem that reaches well beyond Michigan.

In the Facebook statement, Rogers pointed to his history with Clarke rather than specific policy agreements, presenting the endorsement as an extension of their willingness to work together despite political differences.
