WATCH: Police Tackle Climate Protesters Who Disrupted Final Hole At PGA Travelers Championship

The PGA Tour’s Travelers Championship devolved into chaos on the 18th hole Sunday when climate protesters stormed the green just as world number one golfer Scottie Scheffler was set to put for the win.

Just as Scheffler was attempting to put from the edge of the green for a historic sixth win of the season, at least five protesters rushed the green. The protesters proceeded to throw smoke bombs and powdery substances onto the course as police attempted to apprehend them.

Once the protesters were handcuffed and escorted off, the crowd erupted into cheers and chants of “a***ole, a***ole.”

Tour officials and grounds crew members then met on the 18th green to decide how to proceed. The powdery, colored substances presented some problems for the trio of golfers playing the final hole, two of whom were going for a win in Scheffler and Tom Kim.

After grounds crew workers determined the hole was playable given ball positions for the three players, Scheffler narrowly missed a tournament-winning putt by a matter of centimeters. Kim then birdied a six-foot putt to send the tournament to a playoff.

The grounds crew then went to work on clearing the 18th green for the playoff and managed to remove the powdery substances in under 10 minutes. Kim and Scheffler then resumed play after grounds crew workers slightly moved the hole location in order to avoid the most damaged portions of the green.

Scheffler ultimately managed to secure his sixth win of the PGA season after Kim found a green-side bunker on the first playoff hole.

Roughly 50 climate protesters rallied outside the tournament in Cromwell, Connecticut earlier in the week.

“Approximately 50 Connecticut-based climate activists marched alongside the TPC River Highlands golf course today, with banners and signs that called on Travelers Insurance to end their insurance coverage of the fossil fuel industry,” climate activist group Insure Our Future wrote in a press release.

Groups attending the earlier rally included Connecticut Citizen Action Group, Sierra Club Connecticut and the Insure Our Future Coalition.

“Travelers is one of the largest oil and gas insurers in the world and has over $3.5 billion invested in fossil fuel companies. The Travelers must catch up with other leading insurers and make meaningful commitments to end underwriting and investing in climate-destroying fossil fuel projects and companies,” sad Sierra Club organizer Ann Gadwah.
