JUST IN: Conservatives Plot Challenge To Mike Johnson’s Speakership In Major Development

on

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), who rose to his position after a series of tumultuous leadership changes, is facing an internal challenge from within his own party. Several prominent conservative members of the House are reportedly strategizing a way to contest Johnson’s leadership, marking a potential shake-up that could threaten the stability of the Republican caucus in the weeks following the 2024 election.

Hard-line conservatives are gearing up to challenge Speaker Johnson for his leadership role in the upcoming House GOP elections on Wednesday, according to four sources close to the situation who spoke to The Hill.

Sources, who requested anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the discussions, revealed that hard-line conservatives are considering nominating an alternative to Speaker Johnson in Wednesday’s internal GOP elections. They are currently deliberating on potential candidates, though one source warned that the opposition’s efforts might disintegrate.

“There will be a nomination,” said one of the sources.

The challenge to Speaker Johnson’s leadership comes from a rift within the House GOP over his continuation as Speaker, according to one source who spoke to The Hill. The House Republicans are slated to decide on Johnson’s role during their internal elections this Wednesday.

Johnson remains optimistic about his chances of holding onto the leadership position, buoyed by an endorsement from President-elect Trump, who has frequently praised Johnson’s performance. Republicans are expected to retain the House by a slim margin, possibly holding just a few more seats than the Democrats.

Politico reporter Olivia Beavers said on X that House Freedom Caucus Rep Chip Roy (R-TX) hinted at a possible challenge to Speaker Johnson in the upcoming House GOP leadership elections. Speaking to both Beavers and Annie Grayer of CNN, Roy stated that “it seems likely” that Johnson will face a challenger tomorrow.

When pressed on whether he would be the one to challenge Johnson, Roy responded ambiguously, “I don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow. We will see.”

Speaker Johnson informed reporters on Tuesday about his discussions with Trump concerning the tight numbers he’s dealing with in the Capitol. “President Trump and I have talked about this multiple times a day for the last several days. … I don’t expect that we will have more members leaving,” Johnson said. He added that Trump “fully understands and appreciates the math here.”

Axios also reported that House conservatives are poised to nominate a challenger in Wednesday’s internal GOP leadership elections. While Johnson remains the strong favorite for tomorrow’s vote, the move signals a lack of unanimous GOP support as he heads into the House speaker vote in January.

Johnson overcame a leadership challenge in May following the passage of a Ukraine aid package on suspension. Democrats played a crucial role in thwarting the motion to vacate against Johnson’s leadership.
