JUST IN: Democrat Congressman In Coma Weeks After Heart Attack
Rep. Donald M. Payne Jr. (D-NJ), has reportedly been unconscious and on a ventilator in the intensive care unit of Newark Beth Israel Medical Center since suffering a heart attack on April 6.
The six-term congressman from Essex County, who is 65, has not regained consciousness, and his condition appears to be more severe than initially reported, according to the New Jersey Globe.
A statement from Payne’s office on April 9 described the incident as a “cardiac episode” and suggested he was recovering, but this seems to have been an optimistic assessment. His prognosis remains uncertain, and it is unclear when he might return to Washington.
Payne Jr. is still recovering and his prognosis remains positive, his office told the New Jersey Globe on April 12. A spokesman for the six-term Democrat from Essex County declined further comment today. Friends of Payne, who has previously faced health challenges including diabetes and kidney issues requiring dialysis, remain hopeful he will overcome his current difficulties.
On Wednesday, his office wrote in another release, “Congressman Donald M. Payne, Jr. suffered a cardiac episode based on complications from his diabetes last week. Today, he is in stable condition at a local hospital and continues to be under doctor’s care. While we hope for a full recovery, we ask everyone to keep him in your prayers.”
Payne Jr. missed all congressional votes last week as well. While the prognosis for the Democrat remains good, it is uncertain when he will return to Washington. Prior to his tenure in the U.S. House of Representatives, Payne Jr. was involved in local politics, including serving on the Newark Municipal Council and as the President of the Newark City Council, showcasing his deep roots and commitment to local governance.
His political career in Congress began when he succeeded his late father in a special election in 2012, and he has since been re-elected in subsequent terms. Throughout his time in office, Payne Jr. has focused on issues like transportation, education, and public safety, reflecting his priorities for improving infrastructure and services in his district.
In the upcoming 2024 congressional election, he faces no opposition in the Democratic primary on June 4th.
