JUST IN: Elon Musk Reveals DOGE’s Latest Shocking Discovery: ‘Magic Money Computers’
“Magic money computers” within the U.S. government are issuing payments “out of thin air” while leaving lawmakers in the dark about federal spending, Elon Musk told Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) on Monday.
Speaking on the Texas Republican’s podcast, Musk revealed that 14 such computers exist within the U.S. Treasury and other departments where large deposits are transferred without the requisite proof that any payment is needed. When that occurs, spending within a department that is home to a “magic money computer” may be off by as much as 5% when its budget is reported to Congress, Musk claimed, though Cruz characterized the inappropriate payments as worth potentially “trillions” of dollars.
“They’re mostly at Treasury,” Musk said about the computers discovered by his U.S. Department of Government Efficiency, “but there’s some at [Health and Human Services], there’s one or two at State, there’s some at [the Department of Defense].”
“I think we’ve found now 14 magic money computers. They just send money out of nothing,” he told Cruz.
Expounding on DOGE’s discovery, the mercurial entrepreneur said the existence of the computers makes it impossible for Treasury to inform lawmakers about just how much the federal government is spending.
“You may think that government computers all talk to each other, they all synchronize, they add up what funds are going somewhere and its coherent and that the numbers you’re presented as a senator are actually the real numbers. They’re not,” he said.
“How does it work?” Cruz asked, to which Musk exclaims, “It just issues payments!”
As the purveyor of the U.S. dollar, the federal government may print or otherwise “create” money in order to pay its bills, a system known as modern monetary theory. Experts who spoke with the Daily Mail theorized about whether Musk’s disclosure is an attempt to pressure Trump Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to end the controversial practice.
“Either Elon is dumb, which we know he’s not, or this is a cynical ploy to undermine trust in Treasury. @SecScottBessent should tell us whether he agrees with this,” wrote journalist Laura Windsor on X.
“They’re actually kinda correct. The federal government issues money out of thin air. It’s not like a household that needs to have a dollar before spending it. The gov is the *issuer* of the dollar—so it creates it. We can either use it to pay for healthcare or fund wars overseas,” said The Debt Collective, an organization that encourages holders of student loan debt to go on “strike” and withhold payments.
The wide-ranging interview included other admissions by Musk, who said he’s experienced “attempts on his life” since joining the government as a special employee to President Trump. He also posited what the earth may look like in 10 years.
DOGE has faced heavy scrutiny in recent weeks as Musk and his employees work to shore up proof of cost-cutting efforts they claim have saved taxpayers $105 billion since Trump took office. Some receipts showing their reported savings have since been taken offline, with Musk stating he plans to put them back up at a later date.
